Nielsen’s top 10 data also gives an insight into how well the series performs, specifically in the United States.

When she goes on cases, Lucy frequently consults with the mystical and all-powerful Whispering Skull. The Skull is wise and resourceful and is a boon for Lucy. That's why, when her agency gets overwhelmed by the sheer number of jobs that are coming in, the Whispering Skull makes Lucy's life easier. Jonathan Stroud originally planned to kill off Quill Kipps in The Empty Grave and had already written that scene. However, it didn't feel right anymore when he looked at how the series progressed; so he rewrote it and was really glad he made that decision. [7] Amazing Audiobooks for Young Adults". Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). 2015-02-03 . Retrieved 2021-07-18. While there are some nice action scenes, most of the book is just boring. Maybe it's the font choice but my eyes were closing nearly the whole time.

Lucy is delving deeper into Antony's past, and developing her ability to talk to ghosts, one that is admittedly dangerous. Like the other books, there is a spectacular climax, but that's not the end of the tension, since this one ends on a cliffhanger. I wasn't too happy with that. I hate cliffhangers. Second time reading this really stirred up emotions for me. That ending brought tears to my eyes and I just want to lay down and cry. Who knew this series could affect me like this? In the catacombs, Lucy consults the ever-reliable skull in a jar, who says he was there when the Bone Glass was made and that it was created from the bones of seven bodies — whose torment was trapped in the glass to make a window to “the eternal.” The skull says he’s never actually looked in the mirror, because it’s too dangerous: The way to look is through someone else’s eyes — someone weak, curious and vulnerable. Lucy thinks of George.

Despite the problematic morality of Skull's character, I have a feeling he enjoys Lucy's company and feels good playing off of her. Absolutely brilliant and terrifying! And the most petrifying plot twist I've ever read!!! TOM! FREAKING TOM!

While in England, she initially relaxes. However, a woman named Mrs. Wintergarden encounters Lucy and asks her and her agency to solve the haunting of her house. She is not a nice woman, but Lucy and her agency agree to take the case. They deal with and ultimately solve, the haunting of Mrs. Wintegarden's home—all while contending with the worsening outbreak in Chelsea in London. In doing his usual research, George discovered there had been a killing there decades earlier. The son of the wealthy owner at the time had gone crazy, stabbed a servant, and chased the injured boy up the stairs, from which he had fallen to his death. Now, every night at midnight, people who can see ghosts—in other words, Children—feel a terrible, frightening presence and see bloody footprints appearing on the stairs. The series consists of five books: The Screaming Staircase, The Whispering Skull, The Hollow Boy, The Creeping Shadow, and The Empty Grave, published from 2013 [1] to 2017. [2] Supplementary work [ edit ] What, you want me to blow you a kiss? Who cares whether I like you or not? People are dying here. I might be able to do something with it, do us all a favour. If you want to read it yourself, fine. Otherwise give it here. Just don’t put it in the stupid bin.”

Teasing season 2 in the aforementioned Collider article, Joe Cornish told them about the future books (and, therefore the series): Speaking of Lucewood love team, there's another character added to our little band of psychics. Holly Munro is this goody-two-shoes,I'm-so-perfect-and-you-can't-help-but-hate-me-character. The character relationships get more complex, the world-building expands, [there are] twists and turns, and it gets epic, and amazing set pieces. So, we would love to get the chance to put all that stuff on screen, but at the same time, we are very proud of the first season. If you want to find out what’s beyond that door and you can’t wait for more, then it’s in the books.” I also found funny how there were multiple instances of George abstractly speaking about a haunting and Lucy thought he was referring to Holly, just slipping for a moment how bothered by her she really is.

Holly Munro is beautiful, elegant, competent, and nice. Lucy hates her! The only one who agrees with Lucy’s opinion is the Skull. He loves making grotesque faces at Holly, but Holly is not aware it is a Type 3 ghost that Lucy communicates with. Overall, the Skull is a riot and I hope he stays around for quite a bit longer. I think his presence is setting up something bigger. Possibly something related to the bone glass. And I hope he gets a good pay off for it. SO MUCH TO SAY. First: who thought a cliffhanger ending was a good idea? WHY? (It's a good ending. It grows organically out of the story. I just hate cliffhangers.) By darker tone, I mean the hauntings and description of the haunts had a more horror feel to them. Now, I'm not comparing this to a Stephen King book, but I felt more of a terror vibe with this as compared to the creepy and spooky atmosphere of books 1 & 2.
