Description

Change is always going to disrupt and interfere with our plans. Therefore it's important that we keep evolving with the times and taking the perpetual mindset of constant reinvention of ourselves to keep pace with change. The old benchmarks of “goodness” didn’t apply – people became anxious as they didn’t know if they were working hard enough or doing the right thing

The pathless path is about embracing/trusting uncertainty and discomfort in a world that tells you to plan and conform Paul learns about the prestige of strategy consulting and starts to direct his career torwards landing a role in this space.O'Brien, Lucy (December 7, 2018). "The Pathless Announced at The Game Awards 2018". IGN. Archived from the original on December 30, 2022 . Retrieved September 21, 2020. In thoughts about the future, worry is traded for wonder. People stop thinking about worst‑case scenarios and begin to imagine the benefits of following an uncertain path. They get curious about who they might become if they embrace discomfort and are filled with a sense of urgency that says, “if I don’t do this now, I might regret it.” Paul takes a leap of faith and follows Angie to Thailand but he emphasizes existing with the fears of no money, no stability and not having the answers to these prbolems. Rather than trying to tame or control them learn to accept they exist and co-exist and open up to the world. Chapter 8 - Redefine Success

Most people don’t take all-or-nothing leaps of faith – usually, people quit jobs after years of awakening & safely testing changes – eliminate risk so you know what to do before quitting You discover most of your spending is a “misery tax” – expenses an unhappy worker uses to function on the job that keep them there in the first place (e.g. alcohol, vacations) Today – work is often the most important thing in people’s lives – so people want to work for passion & purpose, not financial gain/career advancement One of my favourite things about this book is that it helped me redefine what I want: not necessarily change what I want, but I’ve used certain words and definitions in my mind that I thought was accurate, only to now realize much of it was incorrect. By changing my thoughts around what my goals actually are, I could outline the steps on how to get there, as opposed to all of it floating around in my head. All this said however I do believe that for someone like myself coming from a very low earning household that it’s easier said then done compared to someone like Paul who’s got the capacity to leave it all behind but still join a 5-6figure job if he really needed to.

On aspirational journeys (i.e. the pathless path), you have an incomplete & evolving worldview – you need others to expose/inspire you on different ways to live and work Awakening: The start of a slow but steady drift towards a breaking point while I discover an inner creative and experimental energy that needs to be expressed Play the long game – stop running from things you hate and start experimenting with life until you find/do what matters to you deliberately – chase “freedom to” after “freedom from”

Saving for retirement is great but understanding how you want to live in the present is more important – so later, you’re continuing a good life vs making a huge shift

When it is put that way, the pathless path seems impossible or at the very least difficult and probably painful. But what’s difficult and painful are the pitfalls I’ve listed. The illusion creates all the problems. It’s crucial to see this. The actual path is effortless and pain-free. The mind by its own nature can know its source in pure awareness. By analogy, you can go through troubles, worries, everyday crises, and arguments with your children, but without a doubt you know you love them. Love goes beyond the other stuff—that’s how transcendence, or going beyond, works. The first few months almost feel guilty – but they lead to increased excitement, curiosity and you’ll learn to live life intentionally according to your priorities (not “work”)

To create your own culture on the pathless path you must identify the assumptions you make in your approach to life. Here are some of my assumptions, many of which have been sprinkled throughout this book: Many people are capable of more than they believe. Creativity is a real path to optimism, meaning, and connection. We don’t need permission to engage with the world and people around us. We are all creative, and it takes some people longer to figure that out. Leisure, or active contemplation, is one of the most important things in life, There are many ways to make money, and when an obvious path emerges, there is often a more interesting path not showing itself. Finding the work that matters to us is the real work of our lives. Exploring the history of work through my own aggressive pursuit of a prestigious and impressive careerAs you progress towards leaving the default path, stages of contradiction are normal – e.g. despite being unhappy at work, you might work hard to get promoted Paul works across Asia during his trip and he starts to explore where his journey takes him.
