Description

The book jumps between wartime and 2005 and while we know the significance of The Book of Lost Names pretty much from the start, we learn so much more about it and why it is even more important to Eva than we thought. Her other books include Room on the Broom, Stick Man and Zog, illustrated by Axel Scheffle r, The Hospital Dog , illustrated by Sara Ogilvie and the hugely successful What the Ladybird Heard adventures, illustrated by Lydia Monks. The names in the book are sourced from Yad Vashem’s Central Database of Shoah Victims’ Names, which the institution has been collecting since 1954. It's there that members of the resistance recruit Eva to use her new found forging talents to save thousands of children and adults who would otherwise have been killed by Hitler's regime. There are 36 Lamed Vovniks in each generation, righteous people on whom the existence of the world as we know it depends.

Nila is influenced by mid-century design and children’s books from this era: she describes her work as “Retro modern with a cute twist, and a touch of humour”. The underground were sssooooo lucky to have her, if they said this once they said it a hundred times. The Book of Lost Names, has a dual time line that’s very easy to follow, the story is a about family, sacrifice, duty, friendship, honor, betrayal and lost love. We know that we will never be able to recover all the names, but we make an effort to do that,” Dani Dayan, Yad Vashem chairman, told JNS. While we never see the horrors of the death camps in this novel, we see the heartbreaking impact on so many, especially children, whose mothers and fathers were rounded up by the Nazis sent to those camps, killed there or before they get there. If she helps the resistance group, her mother has a place to stay and she feels like she is doing her part to get back at the Germans and she can’t do anything to help her father.Gayle Lynds, "New York Times" bestselling author of "The Last Spymaster" "The Book of Names grabs you on page one and doesn't let you go. We liked that there was a glossary of Saints Days at the back so parents could consider naming their child according to the day he or she is born, which is today, an unusual thing to do but certainly adds meaning and weight to the naming process.

Full of brightness, fun and irresistible charm, Nila's illustrations are loved by children and adults alike, and they have won her admiration from publishers around the globe. Even my daughter's name is in it, reminding us of the special time we were able to get a signed book. While it wasn’t a chore listening to the audiobook, the narration was smooth and clear, the story itself didn’t interest me much. This book does contain sound bites and musical clips, though these were appropriate, I know some people don't like them.Others are a straightforward “dictionary” incorporating names from all over the globe and spanning centuries. Eva is a girl that loves book that after the war become a librarian, but during the war she helped Jewish kids escape France to safe their life. the reader is treated like we are stupid - why did we need to be told 4 times within 40 pages about valuing her God given talent for artwork?
