Pyrethrins: Derived from the Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium plant and other pyrethrum-related plant species, pyrethrins are commonly used in flea powders and shampoos. Pyrethrins can be toxic to cats in large amounts or if used incorrectly.

The active ingredient in CAPSTAR—nitenpyram—has been extensively studied and found to be both safe and effective (in most cases, even more effective than CAPSTAR's 90 percent claim). Side effects are rare, but you should monitor your cat for 24 hours after dosing, watching out for symptoms like hyperactivity, panting, lethargy, itching, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, salivation, seizures, and pupil dilation. However, if you have adopted a pregnant queen or find yourself with a cat that is expecting unexpectedly, as it were, you may not get the chance to do this before the litter is born. The challenges with flea treatments in young kittens If you have a tiny kitten or puppy, baby shampoo might be your best bet. It’s mild enough to irritate sensitive skin, and it cleans well. Just use your favorite brand and spray liberally. Bonus: You can combine baby shampoo with water in a 1:1 ratio if you prefer a more liquid application instead of foam or gel. 19) A Homeopathic Treatment for Animals In our experience, Adams Plus is one of the most effective flea killing sprays out there today. It offers the fastest relief from biting and itching for cats, and makes short work of fleas that are dormant in carpets and upholstery. There are numerous natural treatments that can deter fleas, but very few can eliminate a flea infestation. David J. Shuman, DVM says, “I’ve tried—or have had clients try—eucalyptus oil, peppermint soap, garlic powders, B12, brewer’s yeast, essential oils, and a long list of other ingredients. This is a well-worn path that often leads to futility.”

Tony, this is an interesting one! I’m not a vet, but here are my thoughts. It looks like this product is intended to be taken internally to deter fleas and strengthen your cat’s immune system. Starting with the latter, the idea that you can deter fleas by strengthening the immune system is…weird. A healthy immune system is what causes the allergic reaction to flea bites. A strong immune system is fine, but a stronger immune response is not necessarily what you want when dealing with fleas. Before you move the litter into the new room, give it 24 hours for the flea treatment used on the queen to take effect, and talk to your vet about the right product to use-a range of well-known brands can be used safely on nursing cats.Flea medication can be given as a tablet or injection if you find it difficult to give your pet a spot on treatment. It works by preventing the flea eggs developing into fleas. Flea combs for cats Ensure all areas, materials and pet bedding treated are fully dry before reintroducing children and pets. Treat your cat - treat your cat and any other cats, dogs and rabbits in the house (on the same day). Ideally use a prescription product from your vets, but if this isn’t possible, use an NFA-VPS product. Products you can buy of the shelf, without a prescription (e.g. from a supermarket or pet shop) often contain less effective ingredients Fleas will move to the driest area of the kitten, so it is not unusual to see them swarm to the head and facial area. If you can grab these fleas with your fingers or tweezers, drop them into a cup of hot, soapy water. 2. Comb out the fleas while the fur is damp. The reason they aren’t as effective is the same reason they’re safe to use around children and spray over every inch of your home. They don’t contain the same strong insecticides that the more powerful flea treatments do. How do I get the most out of a cat flea spray?

While Frontline products should never be ingested, fipronil generally appears to have a low potential for toxicity both topically and even if accidentally ingested. When used properly, side effects of Frontline products are uncommon. Frontline products generally are only labeled for cats 8 weeks of age or older in the US. Treat your cat with an appropriate flea treatment: This is typically a topical spot-on or oral medication. Pay attention to whether the treatment kills adult fleas only or all life stages. Kittens are especially delicate, and some flea treatments are not safe. Follow the advice of your vet. Also, never use medication designed for dogs or adult cats — these could be deadly to a kitten. Depending on the product used and level of infestation, it can range from 24 hours up to several months. Often, it can take three to four months to get rid of an infestation in your home, but fleas on your pets should die within the first 18 to 24 hours. What chemicals kill fleas and their eggs?Add about 15 drops of eucalyptus, 20 drops of lavender, and 10 drops of rosemary to 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake gently before use. Use on your cat once a week. (Avoiding getting it in their eyes.) conclusion: Following application of any Frontline product, it’s important to note that because fipronil causes neurologic overexcitement in the flea prior to killing it, more fleas may become visible and active following application of the product. Remember that a flea spray for cat fleas will provide much better results if used alongside other effective methods to remove fleas from your home. You want to create an environment that fleas cannot survive in.

Totally stain and grease-free, meaning you can spray it over beds, curtains, carpets, and cushions without worrying about leaving any marks. It also repels mosquitoes and since it’s manufactured in the USA, you know the ingredients are of high quality. Serious safety concerns have also been raised. The Seresto flea collar has been named in over 100,000 reports filed with the EPA and, according to the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting, it has been linked to as many as 1,700 pet deaths. Flea collars can also pose a strangulation hazard if they get caught on something. What We Liked: If you are fighting a flea infestation in the home, a Frontline spot-on product can break the flea life cycle.

About Frontline Spray for Cats

Frontline Spray contains only fipronil, which means that it doesn’t provide as much prevention coverage as the newer spot-on product innovations Frontline Plus and Frontline GOLD. Although in many cases Frontline products for dogs should not be used on cats, the spray is labeled for use in both cats and dogs. This is largely because the dosing can be specifically catered to the size of the pet. Flea collars have growth-inhibiting substances in them to stop fleas growing, but most are not a reliable treatment option. Some can also cause irritation.
