Just like other CarPlay features, CarPlay 2.0 will require automakers to opt in. Some have already done so, including Polestar which runs its cars on Android Automotive — and took its sweet time bringing CarPlay to its cars. CarPlay support is either standard or available as an option on many new 2016 cars and later, with some manufacturers offering software updates for earlier models. Some models may support CarPlay only in certain configurations, and not all models are available in all areas. CarPlay support is subject to change. See your dealer for details. It also relies on actually being able to upgrade your car, which isn't an absolute guarantee. You also need to be mindful of is that a lot of aftermarket units require double DIN slot, whereas a lot of older cars may only have one.
