Description

Definitely worth a read though, and it certainly gives an insight into how things are done, and the kind of horrors that prison officers face! From dealing with inmate violence and clearing out defiled prison cells to the unsavoury nature of prison language and life, this is an even more detailed look inside Britain's most infamous prison. There is a handy glossary at the back of the book as there are a lot of acronyms which you will need to get your head round but even if you don't look at the glossary this does not detract from the story in anyway. As a previous serving prison officer who left the service in 1999 I was amazed to read how much the balance of power has changed from the staff to the inmates I retired as a governor and I always made it my priority to support the staff as best I could not as seems to be the case now .

I would not read this again but if anyone said to me life inside is too easy this is one book I would say you have to read to find out what the guards have to put up with, how the prisoners treat other prisoners. His first book, Inside Parkhurst, was an instant Sunday Times bestseller and helped to raise awareness for the ongoing problems within our prison service. If your idea of fun is listening to your grandfather regale you with stories about his brilliance, and the inferiority and incompetence of the rest of the world, this one's for you. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file.Hell yeah it can be incredibly rewarding occasionally you may have a success you never see again but most of the time it's a revolving door with the same old faces revisiting unable to break their programming wasting their existence with incarceration ! As in teaching and the health sector, higher ups could do with listening to those who actually carry out the job!

Trading Address (Warehouse) Unit E, Vulcan Business Complex, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EB. He does mention a few of Parkhurst's most notorious inmates in one sentence, but these are never mentioned again, which was a shame.Beware there is some fruity language as he works his way around bullying, the day they stopped a suicide attempt, crap diet, the scream he can still hear, a scrap on the exercise yard, getting truly screwed, drugs, and playing by the rules. I had also read prison books by Norman Parker, Bobby Cummines (both of these books were also about Parkhurst) and Neil Samworth (also a prison officer), and I enjoyed all of these. He criticises all forms of training and attempts at improvement in prisons, and blames these on rising incarceration rates.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. It seems difficult to help those with serious problems without all other prisoners exploiting the help, so I really sympathise that his job must be arduous.I do feel that the author is very set in his ways, despises the idea of rehabilitation and sees prisons as a place for punishment.

This book had be laughing out loud and gagging so be prepared for some grim stories but I laughed so much!Evident from Berridge's tales, is the sad reality of the system working (or not working as the case may be) and the complete lack of support prison officers received, which I can only hope has possibly improved as the years have gone on, but feel this also may not be the case. I read this whole book as if it was narrated in the voice of Danny Dyer 🤣 it's that kind of witty, London humour. He started his training at HMP Shrewsbury and then spent the next 22 years on the Parkhurst landings, dealing with the country's most violent and badly-behaved prisoners.
