About this deal

At first she seems content to lounge in the sun with her books in what looks like a little corner of paradise. As for Buckley, she perfectly captures the imprisonment young Leda feels, with the revelation that she hates talking to her daughters on the phone pitched somewhere between self-determination and self-loathing. Watching the scenes of her failures and abandonment – rebuffing her daughters, lashing out at them, leaving them – is an uncomfortable experience. Maggie Gyllenhaal acquired the film rights to the Elena Ferrante novel in October 2018, and wrote and directed the adaptation. Plenty of actors who turn to directing can surround themselves with a first-rate crew, and come through with perfectly competent results.

She has no outlet for herself, no recourse for the pressure and little help from her clueless husband. Apart from such small tweaks, the film perfectly mirrors the graceful flow and underlying tension of Ferrante's story. These are the books for which my raging lefty feminist self leaves my body and I get swept up in the unraveling mystery, always trying to guess the whodunnit. Here, Leda tells her daughters she is alive—but she also mysteriously, suddenly is holding a perfectly good orange, and doesn’t question where it came from.Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ.

It is pretty typical for this genre so if you’re already comfortable with these kinds of novels, or perhaps with true crime, you’ll probably be okay. Off-screen Gyllenhaal has surrounded herself with other first-rate collaborators, especially Hélène Louvart, whose cinematography captures the bright sun and glimmering night streets, and takes us inside an exuberant town dance where Leda lets loose to Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer.Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune wrote Gyllenhaal “keeps a close eye on what brings out the best in a scene, and in a story worth telling, with morally imperfect, fully dimensional, persistently human characters. Her daughters ask her to make a snake, referring to when Leda peels an orange all in one go; she does it, and as they are distracted with the peel she leaves. Leda says she is fine and then looks down to discover an orange in her hands; she peels the orange skin off "like a snake", the way she had done for her daughters when they were little. It had some twists I never saw coming and the story was very original and yet not so far-fetched that it was unbelievable. Leda travels more and though she eventually ends the affair, it has become clear that she is ready to leave her life.
