About this deal

The plot centres around a murder mystery night at an isolated hotel and the premise itself is promising.

To my knowledge I've never read a good old fashioned murder mystery like this before and now I'm craving more. To his credit, he has certainly not shied away from a complex murder mystery plot and he has also ensured that the various threads make sense and are neatly interwoven and explained. This time the story is set in the present day, and the book begins by introducing us to the inhabitants of the small Devonshire town of Hamlet and neighbouring Hamlet Wick, in which the residents are at odds over the development of the local lighthouse into a luxury home.So the scene is set for a pretty awkward evening, when on New Year’s Eve various local residents attend a murder mystery party at hotel Hamlet Hall, organised by a Will Hooper, a young man with a troubled past who has his own reasons for wanting the night to be a success. There are multiple layers of mystery that overlap as the story unfolds, including the earlier deaths of a young boy in a tragic fall and a previous murder, the discovery of which is the cause of Will’s PTSD. I thought it only fair to give The Murder Game a fair shot, but as 20% in, have decided to also DNF.

This makes it impossible for readers to grasp the full complexity of the narrative before its final reveal. There are a few twists and turns, the odd red herring and a few reveals around events that happened in the past. He has cleverly layered his book in such a way that by the end of the story we're not just trying to uncover one murder mystery, but at the same time we're trying to pick apart tragedies that happened in the small town of Hamlet Wick years, and even decades, ago. People of opposite sides of a big debate in town are both in attendance, and that's before an unwanted surprise guest joins their troops.

A really interesting storyline peppered with characters who interlink in ways that the reader becomes aware of mainly at the end reveal. Of course, the inevitable happens, and one of the guests ends up dead, and it seems impossible for anyone to have left the hotel.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. I was gripped from the very beginning and willingly turned each page to see what would be uncovered next. The least that could be said is you can turn it into a drinking game every time someone glared or their nostrils flared, which seemed to happen every other page. There are clues, there are red herrings and there are the usual suspects and the ever present motives. There is certainly plenty to like about "The Murder Game" and the influence of those aforementioned authors is plainly evident. And for good measure, Justin Fletcher, journalist on the local paper the Hamlet Herold, is in attendance and determined to get a good story that might be his ticket to a better job.
