She is lying though, even the glassy eyed moose head mounted on the wall seems to taunt her, like everyone, it is judging her too. The two grapple and Tom dies in the lake water but is repossessed by Len, leading his body to become reanimated. The more the women chat and get to know one another, the more clear it becomes to Casey that all is not well in the Royce household.

But the more they get to know each other—and the longer Casey watches—it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom’s marriage isn’t as perfect and placid as it appears. A volcanic eruption is quite another, for, as the journalist who does a framing voice-over narration for Brooks’ latest puts it, when Mount Rainier popped its cork, “it was the psychological aspect, the hyperbole-fueled hysteria that had ended up killing the most people. This is where I thought the author was having a bit of fun with a mash-up of genres, and books/movies that have been done before.Filled with unexpected twists and turns, The House Across the Lake has been compared to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window and praised for its modern take on the genre. I buddy read The House Across the Lake with my sis Irina, and we ended up having identical thoughts on all the ins and outs of what makes this story so divisive. With his trademark blend of sharp characters, psychological suspense and gasp-worthy twists, The House Across the Lake will shock readers from the first page to the last.

Did the author intend this to be a serious thriller or is it a campy homage to certain books/movies (that would be spoilers if I named them all)? Casey's mother, in an ill-advised effort to help her daughter, ships her off to their Vermont lake house, because we all know being secluded in the middle of nowhere on a lake will make you quit drinking. After a shocking encounter on the lake brings Casey and Katherine together, the two women begin a tentative friendship. Alcohol is her coping mechanism -- it makes it possible for her to avoid confronting and dealing with her emotions. The House Across the Lake is a 2022 thriller novel by American author Todd Ritter, writing under the pen name Riley Sager.
