About this deal

One resident stated that a pink-headed duck was sighted in 1998, associating with a flock of gadwall and pintail. It has a squat, thickset body with a long tail, large round head, and short, triangular-shaped bill. The male is a smart mix of black, grey and red whilst the females are of a similar pattern but with colours much more toned down. The female has grey-brown to tawny barred and spotted plumage, with a white belly, and plain flanks. The bulk of the Russian gadwall population, for instance, winters on the Black and Caspian Seas, so only a few records exist of these individuals visiting the UK.

Ducks are split into multiple families, or ‘tribes’, such as dabbling ducks (Anatini), diving ducks (Aythyini) and sea ducks (Mergini). The upper side of the wing is distinguishing, with dark green secondaries (speculum) and prominent white tertiaries in the spot-billed duck and a pinkish-beige speculum, much lighter than its surroundings, in the pink-headed duck. The male has a dark chestnut head, a white chest with black feathers on the back of its neck, and a grey body. Distribution: Widespread in England and along the Welsh coast during winter but more restricted to east and north-east England and the Midlands during summer, with some populations in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the south coast of England.Compared to common scoter, velvet scoter are heavily built with a chunky, wedge-shaped bill along with usually having white in the wing. Diving ducks legs are placed far back, allowing them to use them as paddles but not so great when walking on dry land.

Because of the possibility of survival, the species is still listed by BirdLife International and also the Handbook of Birds of the World. On the head, there is a small white patch under the eye, the bill is yellow with black on the top, and the legs and feet are red.

The beautiful long-tailed duck may be seen in good numbers in sheltered bays off the coast of northern parts of the UK, especially north-eastern Scotland. They can be seen in the UK between March and October in freshwater habitats, such as wet meadows and ditches.

They are a rare breeder but are fairly common and widespread in the winter when migrants arrive from Russia, Scandinavia, and northeast Europe.
