One resident stated that a pink-headed duck was sighted in 1998, associating with a flock of gadwall and pintail. It has a squat, thickset body with a long tail, large round head, and short, triangular-shaped bill. The male is a smart mix of black, grey and red whilst the females are of a similar pattern but with colours much more toned down. The female has grey-brown to tawny barred and spotted plumage, with a white belly, and plain flanks. The bulk of the Russian gadwall population, for instance, winters on the Black and Caspian Seas, so only a few records exist of these individuals visiting the UK.

Ducks are split into multiple families, or ‘tribes’, such as dabbling ducks (Anatini), diving ducks (Aythyini) and sea ducks (Mergini). The upper side of the wing is distinguishing, with dark green secondaries (speculum) and prominent white tertiaries in the spot-billed duck and a pinkish-beige speculum, much lighter than its surroundings, in the pink-headed duck.
