Epic aerial battles and suspense in the skies above BacchusThe Aeronautica Imperialis are the masters of the skies in the 41st millennium, waging wars of breakneck aerial combat where only skill stands between victory and death. The debut novel of Denny Flowers, who had previously written some interesting Warhammer 40,000 short stories, Fire Made Flesh was part of the Necromunda subseries and told a fantastic story about warring factions in a spooky underworld town. If that wasn’t bad enough, Flowers also inserts in a mysterious rotting disease that is making Bacchus even more deadly and hostile. The powerful link he has to these skulls ensures that his mind is often split between different perspectives, and he often views the world through these robotic eyes. Unfortunately, Simlex discovers that Flight Commander Shard has little in common with her brother, and cares nothing for his approval.

But the miners have struck a valuable mineral seam, and this has led to gangers moving in to exploit it. There is a third significant character in the story, but it’s difficult to talk about her without straying into the realms of spoilers. Always depicted with a sneer on her face, Shard appears not to care about her position, and only truly loves flying, drinking and fighting. DF: Caleb Cursebound is the Underhive’s ninth most dangerous man, and a skilled thief, fighter, lover and liar. At the same time, he also attempts to understand what is truly going on with Bacchus and its people, as he finds many strange elements to them, including a spreading disease and a corrupt leader.

I say that because, by WW2, I think most people considered the war a necessary sacrifice to oppose the Axis powers. Guilliman and Mortarion face off in head-to-head combat, but the Lord of Death has a trick up his tattered sleeve – a Primarch-slaying pox.
