The best way to do this is with a hammer and chisel, because you want to split the rock apart, but not shatter it. The included booklet is excellent and tells us that our first geode is quartz, and our second has some quartz and possibly agate. In the end, we just opted to covering it with a towel and hitting it as hard as we could with the hammer which did work to break it.
