About this deal

After finishing the sequence MAT 365 and MAT 560, topology students can consider taking a junior seminar in knot theory (or some other topic), or, if that is not available, writing a junior paper under the guidance of one of the professors. I was actually quite confused by his lack of rigor at some points, but I agree the exercises are really good! g. proper maps and proper group actions, which you will find in Bourbaki), but you learn this on "need to know" basis (just pick up a General Topology book and look it up when necessary). Appropriate for a one-semester course on both general and algebraic topology or separate courses treating each topic separately.

It also deals with subjects like topological spaces and continuous functions, connectedness, compactness, separation axioms, and selected further topics such as function spaces, metrization theorems, embedding theorems and the fundamental group. The study of 1- and 2-manifolds is arguably complete – as an exercise, you can probably easily list all 1-manifolds without much prior knowledge, and inexplicably, much about manifolds of dimension greater than 4 is known. Depending on what you are planning to study later, you might encounter an issue requiring a bit more General Topology (e. Advanced topics—Such as metrization and imbedding theorems, function spaces, and dimension theory are covered after connectedness and compactness. If one is explicitly trying to learn about point-set topology, the extensive variety of different point-set properties, and all of the pathological examples, then this is four or five stars.

He also includes bibliographic references in the Exercises and Problems for all the original publications of the deeper ones (and much of the other ones too). Two separate, distinct sections (one on general, point set topology, the other on algebraic topology) are each suitable for a one-semester course and are based around the same set of basic, core topics.

James Munkres - Wikipedia

I've yet to see (in my limited knowledge of Alg and Diff Topology) any real use of things like Separation Axioms and deeper theory from General Topology. This course is designed for more serious students of topology and this subject is essentially a prerequisite for any more advanced study in topology. Princeton has some of the best topologists in the world; Professors David Gabai, Peter Ozsvath and Zoltan Szabo are all well-known mathematicians in their fields.

Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in. There is not much point in getting lost in the thickets of the various kinds of spaces or their pathologies or even the metrization theorems. I don't know if this is because Munkres is an especially great textbook, or because the material is just naturally easy, but I certainly didn't see any flaws in the book. These graduate courses vary on a semester-by-semester basis and are taught by Professors Gabai, Ozsvath and Szabo.

A significant contribution in topology is his obstruction theory for the smoothing of homeomorphisms. Gaal goes much deeper into the separation axioms and connectedness while Wilansky goes into countability and filters more in-depth. One subfield is algebraic topology, which uses algebraic tools to rigorously express intuitions such as “holes. Truth be told, this is more of an advanced analysis book than a Topology book, since that subject began with Poincare's Analysis Situs (which introduced (in a sense) and dealt with the two functors: homology and homotopy).
