About this deal

He is a police detective, she’s a flight attendant, and as we meet the couple their marriage is strained to near breaking point.

It’s hard for Mina to focus on her job and the passengers she is there to look after though, when her thoughts transport her back home to her troubled five year old daughter Sophia, and her husband Mark. This book is brilliant, Mina is interesting, Adam is someone I want to dislike but I just dont and as for their daughter Sophia - whilst I can appriciate her behavious is maddening she is just brilliant. Just your run-of-the-mill mom and daughter, hanging out, eating dinner, until mom gets sent back to the attic where she’s chained and being held captive—um what?I loved the multiple POV, starting from Adam the husband at home, to Mina getting ready to fly as well as some of the passengers. Gary Noesner retired from the FBI in 2003 following a 30-year career as an investigator, instructor and negotiator.

Frank Bolz is one of the founding fathers of hostage negotiation in the New York City Police Department. Mina has one of the coveted cabin crew spots onboard and takes off whilst Adam is left with Sophia and his own demons to deal with. Which is why Mina has surreptitiously changed shifts with a colleague and is about to be a member of the cabin crew on a history-making maiden flight – 20 hours non-stop from London to Sydney on a Boeing 777 with 353 excited passengers. When we meet her, Mina’s home life is rocky at best: she suspects her husband Adam of having an affair, and is struggling to connect with her young daughter, Sophia.

The book doesn't just deal with the narrative of a group of people held hostage on a plane, but is also about how people are forced to deal with issues and trauma in their lives, in particular parenthood and how this affects women and relationships when people find themselves struggling to have children of their own.

As time ticks down, the plane starts to feel more and more frightening and claustrophobic—to the characters and to the reader as well.

But Mina’s mind is not entirely focused on the tasks at hand as her heart is still firmly on the ground, with her husband, Adam, and daughter.

While I found it hard at times to track who done of the supporting characters were, this no doubt helped with the hijacking setting. Thank you to NetGalley, and to the publisher, who provided me with a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is an idea that you also mention in your own book, and there you point out that active listening isn’t just something people can use in a hostage situation, it is just as important in everyday life. The FBI was charged with investigating the murders and Federal agents tried to come in to resolve the situation, and I headed up the negotiations during the siege.
