About this deal

But in each case, whether it be Alex or Sasha, they both lead of life of honor, hard work and commitment.

Heads You Win is Jeffrey Archer’s first standalone novel in almost 10 years, and follows the story of Alexander Karpenko as he flees from Russia and makes a decision on the flip of a coin that will affect how the rest of his life unfolds.I haven’t worked on anything as demanding since Kane and Abel, and am very excited about the way it has worked out. Throughout the book, and in the premise, the impression is that it is the same person whose story is written from 2 different perspective. It was wonderfully engaging, with the mother of all twists at the end, but Mr Archer, if you’re listening, my advice is this - don’t visit Russia anytime soon, that’s all I’m going to say!

The thick steak that along with the parsnips and the potatoes, had been “repatriated”—a word Alexander had taught her, had been cut into two pieces. Perhaps Archer was being just a little more profound in trying to suggest we cannot escape our fate, that wherever the path of life takes us, the ultimate destination is pre-ordained – not, it has to be said, an original concept. As this unique story unfolds, Alexander comes to realize where his destiny lies, and accepts that he must face the past he left behind in Russia. That was the beginning of the idea, because, of course, Colin Powell, went on to be secretary of state in the United States. The juxtaposition of the main characters with different lives in different countries over three decades was brilliant, interesting and engrossing. The narrative spans three decades and two continents, and is rich in both historical, and political detail. I can’t speak for the accuracy of some of the historical and political details because, although I recognised several names, my knowledge of British politics is not sufficiently assured. There were a couple of very short paragraphs towards the end of the book that seemed to undermine the basic premise of the story.
