Panasonic’s (Micro) Four Thirds partner Olympus has created a lot of excitement with the Pen E-PL3, while Sony’s Alpha NEX-C3 also provides compelling arguments in its favour, not the least of which is it’s larger APS-C sensor. And, of course, when you press the movie record button on the GF3, horizontal black bars appear top and bottom when shooting in 16:9 movie modes. On the bottom is a metal tripod socket, importantly in-line with the middle of the lens barrel, and the shared battery compartment and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slot. There are a wide range of AF modes on offer, including multiple-area AF with up to 23 focus areas, 1-area AF with a selectable focus area, Face Detection, AF Tracking and Pinpoint. Alongside the new sensor, the GF3 uses the same Venus Engine VII HD image processor found in the GF2.With the arrival of the GF3, Panasonic further solidifies the distinctions between its existing G-series lineup.

Video options include rack-focus via touchscreen AF and (new to the G-series) the ability to extract a frame from a movie during playback and save it as a still image.
