About this deal

In the 20th century, clothing designers began marketing their own lines of scents, and almost any celebrity with a lifestyle brand can be found hawking a perfume with their name (if not smell) on it. The art of perfumery prospered in Renaissance Italy, and in the 16th century, Italian refinements were taken to France by Catherine de' Medici's personal perfumer, Rene le Florentin. They used it in their bathwater, in poultices, and enemas, and consumed it in wine or drizzled on a sugar lump.

Queen Victoria herself grants The Crown Perfumery (founded in 1872 by William Sparks Thomson) special permission to add an image of her crown to the perfume bottles. It was very helpful afterwards because I approached things differently in my creations – and this was specific to growing up in Grasse. The company eventually expanded into Asia, and remained under the operation and management of family members until 1999, when it was acquired by Compagnie Financière Richemont S. Perfume use peaked in England during the reigns of Henry VIII (reigned 1509–1547) and Queen Elizabeth I (reigned 1558–1603). Perfumers were also known to create poisons; for instance, a French duchess was murdered when a perfume/poison was rubbed into her gloves and was slowly absorbed into her skin. Perfume of the modern age is made from a combination of denatured ethyl alcohol scented essential oils.

The court of Louis XIV was even named due to the scents which were applied daily not only to the skin but also to clothing, fans and furniture. The Bible describes a sacred perfume ( Exodus 30:22-33) consisting of liquid myrrh, fragrant cinnamon, fragrant cane, and cassia. The Egyptians predominantly ruled between circa 3000 BC to 1000 BC where perfumes and incenses were used in religious ceremonies. Perfume remained the main substitute for daily hygiene among the upper classes, and after the creation of the lighter ‘cologne water’, fragrances became more accessible for all classes. In her now defunct blog The Tig, the former actress explained that Wild Bluebell by Jo Malone London is one of her two signature scents. The Persian Muslim doctor and chemist Ibn Sina (also known as Avicenna) introduced the process of extracting oils from flowers by means of distillation, the procedure most commonly used today. The world's first recorded chemist is a woman named Tapputi, a perfume maker whose existence was recorded on a 1200 BCE Cuneiform tablet in Babylonian Mesopotamia. Russia had begun to modernize its extremely backward economy after the abolition of serfdom in 1861.
