About this deal

During that long, harrowing ordeal, Annis begins to experience the natural world in a new, sometimes frightening, sometimes familiar, way.

Her writing brings us completely into the mind/body of Annis and I’m still tied to Annis days after finishing this book. Through her journey, she discovers that the world is filled with spirits –those who nurture and give and those who manipulate and take – and she becomes familiar with both kinds.

But the simple truth is that the book made me weep for the utter horror of those lives that Jesmyn Ward brings to life. And they support and love each other, finding ways to help and show gentleness even in the the worst situations. Annis is heartbroken and inconsolable after her mother is sold South to the slave market in nineteenth-century New Orleans.

Let Us Descend is an atmospheric, moving tale that sweeps you away to North Carolina during the mid-1800s and into the life of Annis, a young woman of mixed race trained by her mother in more than just servitude who, after being sold one year after her beloved Mama, is forced in chains on a gruelling march from the rice fields she’s only ever known to the sugar plantations of New Orleans where with a little help from the spirit world beyond she endures extreme hardships and brutal savagery until she can find an opportunity to finally slip free. The thrilling, perilous race to the trident pits old friends - and current enemies - against each other with the future of Auradon on the line. I always have a difficult time reading about slavery because I can't understand how people can be so cruel.Young Annis, who narrates the story in an urgent hush, is the daughter of her White enslaver and her enslaved mother. this is the first of the hard case crime / john lange reissues i’ve read but i’ve heard it’s the best of the 6 crichton books with HCC. As for the book itself: Grave Descend is short convoluted and fast moving thriller that was a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

With McGregor diving to the wreck amidst hammerhead sharks and moray eels, he faces many hazards but why?Her reliance on the spirits for answers does help to outline her loneliness and how much has been taken away from her. Annis’ sense of hope springs from her imagination and belief in her own strength, to be regarded, and to regard. With her friend Safi no longer by her side and her mother and grandmother so far out of reach, Annis begins to despair. This isn't a character study this is an action adventure story, characters only exist to drive the plot.

As Annis descends deeper into her own enslavement she remembers and has reverence for her mother and her grandmother Mama Aza.While Ward leads listeners through the descent, this, her fourth novel, is ultimately a story of rebirth and reclamation. GRAVE DESCEND works well by virtue of its place setting accompanied by interesting twists and turns which separates it from the more traditional formulaic detective stories. In “Sing, Unburied, Sing,” which won another National Book Award in 2017, she described the notorious Parchman Farm, where Southern slavery was effectively re-legalized for the 20th century.
