About this deal

What’s more, this toothpaste for sensitive teeth remineralises tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to acid attacks, which could cause sensitivity. We’re not going to lie – the colour of this toothpaste was a bit off-putting, thanks to its off-white hue. We asked a panel of dental experts to examine the evidence behind claims on six premium toothpastes and give their verdict on when it's worth spending more.

As to the consistency, it's actually quite runny and soft compared to others, it does make it easier to get out of the tube, but sometimes wonder if I'm going to drip it. Don’t assume this means compromising on cleaning power though – this toothpaste left our teeth feeling amazingly clean and, when used during a sensitivity flare-up, there was a definite soothing effect (apparently thanks to something known as “ActivCalm technology”). Stain removal should be reasonable with this toothpaste (better than regular fluoride toothpaste), thanks to abrasives such as silica, and surfactants (foaming agents) including sodium lauryl sulfate and cocamidopropyl betaine, plus the addition of phosphates for tartar reduction. These include green tea, used for its deodorising action and extra fluoride to prevent dental cavities. Then again, perhaps we should be wondering why we’ve become so accustomed to dazzlingly white toothpastes, and should be questioning which ingredients are used to create this effect. Hydrogen peroxide (a bleaching agent) is commonly used in whitening toothpastes, but it's a bit of a red herring as the legal limit for over-the-counter toothpastes is too low to actually affect the colour of your teeth. This is another great all-rounder which is ideal for anyone who wants to combine powerful cleaning action with whitening power. No, it won’t give you the ridiculously whitened smile of celebs like Simon Cowell or Rylan Clark, but what it will do is remove light stains for lighter, brighter teeth. It's advanced head technology with floss-tip bristles that reach 4X* deeper to gently clean between teeth and along the gumline for a healthy smile.

Most cavity-fighting toothpastes share five common ingredients, fluoride, abrasives, flavors, humectants, and detergents, while specialty toothpastes for whitening, sensitive teeth, etc.If you've got sensitive teeth, for example, there's good evidence that certain ingredients can target the pain and these aren’t always in basic fluoride toothpastes. Sensodyne says this term refers to the protective layer formed over the surface of the teeth, which has been shown in lab studies.

Aspects like long-term stain removal and plaque reduction were harder to prove, but our testing sessions – which took place over several weeks – provided more than enough time to evaluate claims relating to these issues. We loved Colgate’s decision to offer a nod to old-school toothpastes by creating a toothpaste with dual stripes built into the paste – in this case, pale orange and white stripes. LA Pacific's toothpaste is one of the more expensive products we saw – perhaps to do with its marketing as an ‘oral beauty’ product – but neither the company’s evidence nor general evidence for the specified ingredients shows clear advantages over other whitening toothpastes. This bright blue toothpaste comes with a long list of claims – it will, according to the blurb, prevent cavities, prevent plaque, protect against sensitivity, prevent tartar, prevent enamel erosion, freshen breath and whiten teeth.Colgate said evidence for this formulation was also commercially sensitive, but there is evidence that the zinc oxide and zinc citrate combination used has antibacterial properties, which our experts said should give this product advantages in reducing gum inflammation vs basic fluoride toothpastes. We put an expiration date on our products that coincides with our product stability testing results and depending on the product, it varies from 18 to 24 months after manufacturing date. It can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath and even tooth loss if you don’t manage it effectively. To keep it under control, it’s important to practice good oral hygiene, including brushing your teeth twice a day with a highly effective antibacterial toothpaste, flossing and visiting your dental professional for regular checkups.
