About this deal

The JSM400 Jumpstarter is supplied with a zip fastening bag, AC battery charger, smart charging cable, switch cable, 3 way USb cable, car charger adapter and 8x notebook adaptors. A larger battery size (usually measured in Ah) means generally easier starting and more reserve charging power for phones etc. In the event of replacement or repair during the manufacturer's guarantee period, or after, our liability is limited to the cost of the repairing or replacing the item. However, it was a huge surprise to find how well it performed on our test motor, easily turning it over five times and maxing out at a very healthy 130A.

The bag with straps to hold everything securely is handy, but we’d have preferred a more protective case.Internal 12V 18Ah Sealed lead acid battery, with mains powered charger and 12V charger lead for in-vehicle charging. Our favourite in recent tests was the Clarke JSM300, which performed well in the vehicle jump start assessments, but also included a variety of adaptors to power other accessories. Multifunction Jump Start Portable Device Charger (32Ah)This small and lightweight portable lithium - ion power bank with inbuilt torch is suitable for use with larger vehicles with a diesel engine capacity. We got an impressive 122A on test, but were surprised that only one of the two USB sockets was the more versatile 5/9/12V type. This amazingly small and lightweight portable lithium - ion power bank with inbuilt torch weights only 500g (without leads).

Large wheels allow easy movement around the work area and the large ammeter at the top of the device provides a clear display of output current while in use. This 1kg unit oozes features, not least being the only one to charge a battery as well as start it – which it did with ease. You don’t want to find out your washer jets have frozen when you are doing 60mph either, so make sure your screenwash has been upgraded for the cold weather and that you have ‘primed’ the pipes with the new fluid. Not a terrible result, but we get the feeling that if there were any other engine troubles, it would struggle to start it. This portable 12V power pack will provide standby or emergency power to start vehicles with up to 3litre engine capacity. It easily turned our engine over as required and finished with a final battery reading of 98 per cent, registering a best-on-test 152 amps. We liked the zip-up case that kept everything together with elasticated straps and included mains and car chargers. If you are forced to abandon your car on a motorway in freezing rain, having these on hand could be a real benefit for you and your family. It’s the smaller of the two NOCOs we tried and we liked the clear layout with large buttons for the light and on/off, and a simple LED set-up that made getting it wrong impossible. litre petrol and diesel engines, like many here, the Halfords unit has a cover on its jump-start socket, but not USBs.

Additional outputs include two 12V dc accessory sockets (cigarette lighter type) and a 5V USB connector allowing the unit to power a wide range of portable equipment such as mobile phones, laptops etc. If you live in areas where the temperatures regularly plunge, it might be worth choosing dedicated winter tyres. Importantly, all our test units are fitted with at least one USB socket, making them useful charge points for phones, tablets etc. Most will also double up as a USB charge pack, which could make them invaluable if you are stuck somewhere remote with a flat smartphone battery. These compact boxes are no bigger than a microwave ready meal, yet they will provide multiple jump starts to a car with a flat battery.
