About this deal

I always find the books such a wealth of information when dealing with children with difficult pasts. We see each other at least once a year, usually just before Christmas when I take presents and also a ‘goody bag’ containing a Yule log. It is clear that in his short life he has gone through something traumatic, but Cathy is struggling to find out what. Even though I suspected what had happened to Jodie, when it was revealed in the book, it sent not only dread but shivers of fear through me to know that this happens and is happening to children all over the world as we speak.

From the Sunday Times bestselling author comes a true story of two deeply troubled boys both in need of a loving home. This is perfectly understandable, considering the delicate nature of the material that Glass covers.Once she reads Aimee’s referral, she starts to understand why they want someone with her experience. Jodie is getting involved with others and getting friends that are helping her to become more social. Jodie's childhood had been an appalling litany of mistreatment and neglect, which should have been alerted the numerous social work professionals involved with her case. It is this type of sad but honest writing that helps the reader sympathize as well as empathize with the child that Cathy finds covered in blood that first night, after cutting her own wrist. Both are in their 20s and still live at home, and both, along with Adrian, have embraced all the foster children coming in and out of their home.

Jodie's case file was so big it filled two suitcases, but apparently not one of her social workers had ever read the entire file. Glass started writing in her spare time, when she wasn’t busy caring for her family, including her various foster children. But you would never think that this well-balanced girl is actually masking a childhood of trauma, having been abused by the people who were supposed to love and care for her. I'm pretty sure if I had not been reading this in my classroom amongst my students during silent reading time, I would have been bawling my eyes out from the way the book ended (not the "Progress" epilogue, but the last bit of the last chapter). Jodie was the most disturbed and abused child I had ever looked after, and her behaviour was so difficult that she has seen off five carers in four months. The grandparents are too old to look after Alice, and the plan was to send Alice to her father – much to the grandparents’ distress. One of Cathy’s earliest and bestselling memoirs, Damaged is a heartbreaking story that proves just how valuable foster carers are for society’s most vulnerable children. His concern – a concern that stops most people entertaining the idea of fostering – was that Cathy would grow so attached to the little girl that she wouldn’t want to give her back. If you enjoy spending time with children and young people, whether you have your own offspring or not.

It was Leah I recognised first and then Alice who was walking between her parents and quite the young lady. Soon it became obvious that Dawn was going to be much harder to parent than we first imagined,’ says Cathy. So that’s almost it and I really admire CATHY GLASS for her amazing social service and for what she did to all the children who were in need. The rest of this series is a continuation of the stories of Faye and Lauren, and the role Cathy plays in their journeys.

Here is a quick description and cover image of book Damaged: The Heartbreaking True Story of a Forgotten Child written by Cathy Glass which was published in 2007-2-5. When Cathy was first approached, she was concerned about whether she even knew how to look after a baby.v jejím případě totálně po celou dobu selhávaly a sociální pracovníci si Jodie přehazovali jako horký brambor. The extent of the damage done to Jodie is explained all throughout the book as she lives with Cathy. I grew up in a foster home, and even though I had a good relationship with my foster mother I wasn’t close to my foster father. For Cathy, a slight woman with natural good looks who has an unusual mixture of warmth and assertiveness, it’s all in a day’s work. Because of her progress (and tightening budgets) the social services decided she was well enough to live with a foster family and found one in the area so she could continue at the same school and maintain friendships.
