About this deal

Other real-life places referred to in Runemarks and Runelight are: Farnley Tyas (which is also the name of a village near Almondbury) and the nearby Molly Carr Woods. This is a modern version of the epistolary novel and it reminded me of its ancestor, Liaisons Dangereuses, especially as we again have two unreliable, unappealing narrators, B. PS if you are interested in reading more about synaesthesia I would highly recommend Astonishing Splashes of Colour, an excellent novel by Clare Morall and in non-fiction, Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet – both fascinating and highly enlightening reads.

Although we don't have the obvious foodie motifs here, there are plenty of sensations at play, the most intriguing of these being synaesthesia, a neurological condition where the senses overlap. Blueeyedboy is the brilliant new novel from Joanne Harris: a dark and intricately plotted tale of a poisonously dysfunctional family, a blind child prodigy, and a serial murderer who is not who he seems. blueeyedboy’ is the online name of Benjamin Winter, a troubled man who joins a creative writing forum. In fact, in this book, no-one is quite as they appear; identities are interchangeable, and can be assumed and discarded when necessary. In real life BB is 42 and still lives with his mother, a highly controlling personality who insists on making her son drink daily vitamin drinks of her own making, and may have violent tendencies of her own. In 2000, her 1999 novel CHOCOLAT was adapted to the screen, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp.

I would still recommend this book, but perhaps not as strongly as some of Joanne Harris's other work. This virtual community, created by Blueeyedboy, purports to celebrate fictional villains everywhere, and through this medium he keeps in touch with his online friends – some of which are also known to him in real life, most particularly Albertine, with whom he shares a troubled past. Como disse não é um dos meus livros preferidos mas mantém o estilo inconfundível da escritora para além de ter uma das capas mais bonitas da editora. The way it's told, through a series of fictional/semi-fictional blog posts by the two main characters, caused the narrative to lose momentum a little, and as a result the suspense didn't build enough for me and the twist at the end, while clever, didn't deliver the punch I was expecting. Disappointing as after enjoying Gentleman and Players her first psychological thriller, I expected more from this one.I understood too, how emotionally dependent people can sometimes become on their virtual friends and their virtual communities, even though there can be no way of knowing how honest these avenues of communication really are. The dues were expensive but I never had to deal with poor gym etiquette, everyone re-racked their weights, no one tied up a work station unreasonably long, and there was general courtesy and consideration towards everyone. If you are of a sensitive disposition, easily offended or shocked perhaps Blue Eyed Boy is not for you.

It becomes clear that Benjamin and blueeyedboy are one; it’s also clear his murderous fury has been acted upon many times before. I feel, strongly, that if you don’t explore the dark side from time to time, then the rest of it has no meaning. She lives in Yorkshire, plays bass and flute in a band first formed when she was sixteen, and works in a shed in her garden. In others, we see someone taking on the identity of someone else – Snyde in Gentlemen and Players; LeMerle in Holy Fools; Zozie in The Lollipop Shoes. I thought I would love this, as I recently read Joanne Harris's 'Gentlemen and Players', which I thought was a superb book, and was told this was in the same vein.Because one of my characters in blind, I wanted to introduce a less visual dimension than I usually do, and focus on other aspects of perception, such as smells, tastes and sounds. Premium Digital includes access to our premier business column, Lex, as well as 15 curated newsletters covering key business themes with original, in-depth reporting. Even so, Harris admits to sharing some of her anti-hero’s darker sensibilities – and that extends to thoughts or murder. One can feel a bit more sympathy for Albertine, but even she does not seem like an innocent blameless victim.

She adapted her novel State of Happiness for film with Zentropa/Fiesta, HBO have optioned her Theodora novels for a TV mini-series. blueeyedboy resembles the old-fashioned epistolary novel, with posts serving to create a ‘real-time’ psychological build-up. For her next novel, Harris intends to please the fans who found Blueeyedboy a bit too hot to handle. Still living at home at forty-two, a janitor in a local hospital, he hates himself, hates his life and yet he has managed both to retain his sense of humour and to re-create himself online as the person he would rather be, instead of the born loser he really is.

Since I read her book Gentlemen and Players I knew she is in her element with thrillers and the ultimate Queen of the twist. And yes, this is a very dark tale, although I see it principally as a black comedy, not to be taken entirely seriously. The plotline did not advance quickly, and although I understood it to be more of a character study, I was just not fully invested.
