About this deal

Sigma is more active than anyone else in this space, with not only an Art series 24-70mm f/2.8, but also a faster and shorter-range 24-35mm f/2 , so it’s interesting to compare the performance of these with others lenses sharing a Nikon mount, including the well-liked Nikon model and its equally-respected predecessor. The graph below shows the chromatic aberration values at the three models’ widest focal lengths and widest apertures. All three exhibit lateral chromatic aberration of greater than 10 microns from around the 80% mark from the center of the image.

Of utmost importance in lens selection is acquiring the right focal length or, in the case of a zoom lens, the right range of focal lengths that cover your needs. We did note some field curvature for macro shooting, which leads to rather soft corners, but the 24–70mm F2.8 isn't an incredibly sharp lens when shooting close-up in the first place. Stopping down yields very good corner sharpness. I'm just getting started into the list of uses for this lens and the range of video uses for this lens is as broad as for stills. Typical is for a zoom lens in this focal length range to exhibit barrel distortion at the wide end transitioning into negligible distortion and on into pincushion distortion at the long end.Filter-thread: 82mm just like the others except for the Tamron which uses cheaper 67mm filters. [0] Magnification from wide angle through standard/normal focal length lenses, including this one, is generally significantly increased with the use of extension tubes which are basically as their name implies, hollow tubes (with electronic connections) that shift a lens farther from the camera. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens is available in Canon (reviewed), Nikon and Sigma mounts and the Canon mount version can be used on a Sony E-mount camera body via the From the lens design guidebook for this era: if it is a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, it must have 82mm filter threads.

There is also the risk of a problem that results in the lens and body manufacturers directing blame at each other. At f/4, I like the Sigma results slightly better at the long end and the Nikon appears to be slightly sharper at the wide end, though the CA definitely gets in the way of the latter comparison. While it may not be amazingly better than the other options from an optical perspective, the 24-70 Art lens is priced very significantly less than the Canon, Nikon and Sony counterparts. Both the earlier model and the Nikkor have higher levels of aberration than the Art lens up to 50mm, and somewhat beyond for the Sigma’s predecessor. But this is mostly present in the corners of the frame and will likely only be noticeable along high-contrast edges. Software can usually remove chromatic aberration when processing RAW files, but its effect on sharpness can be difficult to correct. The Canon's rear-positioned zoom ring is a much better design, but for sure you will like the Sigma's roughly-25%-lower price tag better. Light fall-off is substantially reduced at f/4 and again at f/5.6 where the shading basically remains visible only at 24mm – nearly 2 stops worth.

Designed specifically for mirrorless, the lens is compatible with either full-frame or APS-C camera bodies. For the latter it offers full-frame-equivalent focal lengths from 36mm to 105mm, with corresponding impact to the effective aperture. With its standard zoom range on full-frame and generous maximum aperture, it's well-suited to subjects like portraits, weddings, events, travel and street photography. It also has decent macro capabilities and is quite well-suited to video, making it a versatile all-rounder. However, at 107.6 x 88 mm (4.2 x 3.49 in) and 1.02 kg (36 oz), it’s quite a bit bigger and heavier than the lens it replaces, which measures 95 x 89 mm (3.73 x 3.5 in) and weighs 0.79 kg (27.87 oz).Intriguingly, the most expensive lens of the three — the Nikkor 24-70mm — has the highest distortion at every focal length save 70mm, where it an equal amount (–0.5%) of pincushion distortion as the Art series model. So how does the Sigma 24–70 F2.8 Art handle bright light sources and flare? It's definitely a mixed bag and the impact will largely depend on the kind of photography the lens is used for. So, expect that whichever of these lenses you buy you’ll get wonderfully high resolution images. I probably wouldn’t make a lens choice based on resolution, here. Autofocus Performance From the perspectives of many, it was hoped that this lens would get that spotlight for its exceedingly sharp image quality performance and from that perspective, I'm sure that there is some let-down among the hopeful. At f/2.8, the Canon is noticeably sharper than the Sigma, especially in the center of the frame and in the extreme corners.

Impression

But when shooting wide-open with the Sigma 24–70mm, the shape of the cat's eye effect is rather unusual and quite different to that we've seen in other lenses. There's a quite noticeable shift in angle as if the shaded side of the bokeh has been further flattened, and it makes the bokeh even more distracting than it would be in a lens exhibiting regular cat's eye. While the Sigma lens is physically shorter and lighter than the Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM (5.35″ long, 1.95lbs), it is still substantially larger than the Tamron 28-75; the Sigma weighs 1.84 pounds compared the the Tamron’s 1.21, about 65% as much as the Sigma.
