UPDATE: The TV series based on the idea of the books is on Netflix in the US. Aired four years ago, and you can tell: Location is key because there is nowhere else like Shetland, it has its own traditions and culture, and can feel like another country." — David Kane Shetlanders should be proud of the series because they contributed so much to the show. From the archaeologist who recreated an authentic dig on set, to the officers of Shetland Islands Council who helped out with office accommodation to the 'Up Helly Aa' committee who agreed to stage the parade, everyone's been amazingly supportive.”Even though I tried to guess who the murderer I was unsuccessful until the end and a bit disappointed! After an accident Perez is called to investigate and decide what is to be done with the person responsible. As the story continues questions arise as to wether or not it was an accident and then another person dies under tragic circumstances and Perez doubts that it's a coincidence and tries to find the pieces that fit to complete the puzzle and connect the two murders. My Review: This is the third in what the publishers call The Shetland Islands Quartet in some places, A Shetland Islands Thriller in others. I hope that this betokens a realization on the part of Cleeves and her publishers that the series has the essential ingredient for longevity: Terrific characters entwined in believeable relationships.

Douglas Henshall doesn’t look like my Jimmy, who is dark and Mediterranean. But Douglas brings a quiet authority and an ability to be still and to capture attention that is absolutely right. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival. Location is key because there is nowhere else like Shetland, it has its own traditions and culture, and can feel like another country. The fact that these islands, quiet for centuries, are now dealing with the influx of 'incomers' to work in the oil business makes for great contrasts in landscape and people. Because I've worked with this production team before I knew they would be respectful of the original, and any changes will be to make a better film.As a mystery it’s almost closer to a traditional Agatha Christie or a solid (non-fluffy) cozy. Not really, but the feel is closer to those than what you’d expect from a contemporary mystery.

Another suspicious death. The uncovering of a history where during the war a Norwegian resistance fighter disappeared mysteriously. How Sandy’s family was involved and how the dig started a tragic chain of events. I recommend the book as one to take you to a far away place, and make you know real people you will now expect to meet there if you ever manage to get yourself to this water-defined land. Red Bones was adapted into a 2-part TV show that made up the first series of the of the Scottish television crime drama Shetland.

I really love this series, there's just something about it, it's like going home, or putting on a comfy pair of slippers. I just love Ann Cleeves writing, I mean this woman can write. The setting, Shetland, is so interesting and mysterious, and the characters in these Shetland books - they give me the creeps! Everyone has secrets they want to keep hidden. Everyone has a past.

Shetland is adapted from the novel Red Bones. The book is based around an archaeological dig and the mystery starts with the murder of the elderly woman who crofts the land where the dig is happening. The book and the TV drama is about digging into the past to find answers to family disagreements. And in the TV adaptation there's the wonderful climax of the Viking fire festival 'Up Helly Aa'.

Stars — Cleeves writes elegantly & Detective Perez is an endearing character both for his skill and insight as a detective but more so his genuine nature, his willingness to have empathy as a person first, is refreshing. His attributes as a Father who’s there for his child when he can be and his constant struggle to balance that with his job are more real and human than many a detective ever displays in the loads of Literature out there focused on crime. A suspenseful, professional-grade north country procedural whose heroine, a deft mix of compassion and attitude, would be welcome to return and tie up the gaping loose end Box leaves. The unrelenting cold makes this the perfect beach read.
