About this deal

The Razer Hammerhead True Wireless X is a semi in-ear wireless earbuds, so it tends to be a little loose. Some are fine with that, but for me, I prefer using the earbuds with the provided rubber eartips for a snugger fit. Because of its design, it doesn’t have ANC built-in, and provides a “natural ambient mode” for you to hear your surroundings. Potentially solving this (on paper, at least), is the ‘Bass Boost’ EQ setting. While this does up the bass, it ends up muddying the overall quality of the sound. Unless bass is of utmost importance, you’ll probably find yourself turning off bass boost not long after turning it on, like we did. In some cases it almost sounded like you have a bit of water in your ear. If you read that table closely you may have noticed that there is something called “gaming mode” that you can toggle on or off. This is where Razer’s gaming expertise comes into play, because the company claims that by activating gaming mode the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless earbuds will have a super-impressive latency of 60ms. Seeing as these earbuds use AAC for its connection to your phone, it’s not terribly surprising. Now full disclosure: I’m not a hardcore gamer, but I have a hard time noticing any practical latency playing games on mobile devices. I did find that with the gaming mode turned on I had no audio-visual lag while watching videos, but that could also just be because AAC usually handles lag well enough all on its own. How do you pair to the Razer Hammerhead? The main selling point of the Razer Hammerhead true wireless earbuds is its low latency game mode, and while this will appeal to a niche audience, for most people you won’t even realize the feature is turned on – or off.

The app itself is rather basic, but we’re not always fond of Razer’s overly complicated software on PC, so we're not too upset about this. Once paired, the app allows you to install firmware, as well as view the battery levels of the earbuds, and select from a few limited EQ presets. Razer is a company that makes gaming peripherals and I doubt that’s news to anyone—given just how many gaming headsets they have on the market. It has products in every category from keyboards to laptops, all of which tend to have a gaming angle to them. So how exactly does a pair of true wireless earbuds fit into that vision? Who are the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless for? It’s a lot shorter than the budget JLab JBud Air Executive True Wireless earbuds, which offer six hours of battery life, and 24 hours additional juice with the charging case.

As for the charging case, it has a smooth matte finish, with a groove on the front for easier openings, and a status LED right below it. On the bottom of the case, there’s a USB Type-C port for charging, and the top lid has the Razer logo etched in. If you compare the charging case of the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless X with the Pro variant’s, it’s very hard to notice the difference. It’s comfortable to hold, and the hinge stays firm and opened as it should be. Many people might not ever notice this lag – especially if you mainly just listen to music – but for anyone who has been frustrated by this when gaming, then this is a feature that could temp you.Connecting the Razer Hammerhead true wireless earbuds is pretty simple – you can either do it through your device’s Bluetooth settings, or via the Hammerhead True Wireless app.
