As a writer myself, I know how it is to write female characters. It is hard. I’m all for twisted characters. They can start as an horrible ass, but they will grow in the story and learn something. Ryen doesn’t. She doesn’t change at all. She’s just a spoiled brat bully surrounded by terrible friends. If someone changed, this is Misha, who changed to fit what she wanted of a guy and became a bully himself. Punk 57 Book Review: How Ridiculous It All Feels

like you. Go ahead and try to deny it. I know you don’t have to sit there with your sister, man. She’s old enough to watch TV by herself. In the middle of the night, everything comes crashing down. At a party that Misha’s band mates are throwing, he meets Ryen and because her name is so unique. He instantly knows that she is the girl he has been exchanging letters with for the past seven years. However, the Ryen he meets is different than the one he knows from the letters and after facing a huge disappointment, Misha’s world is turned upside down with a tragic event. No, actually, it’s far worse, and I’m a little embarrassed to tell you. But I think negative feelings should be released. Just once, right? Dear Misha, So, have I ever told you my secret shame? And no, it’s not watching Teen Mom like you. Go ahead and try to deny it. I know you don’t have to sit there with your sister, man. She’s old enough to watch TV by herself. No, actually, it’s far worse, and I’m a little embarrassed to tell you. But I think negative feelings should be released. Just once, right? You see, there’s a girl at school. You know the kind. Cheerleader, popular, gets everything she wants… I hate to admit this, especially to you, but a long time ago I wanted to be her. Part of me still does. You would absolutely hate her. She’s everything we can’t stand. Mean, cavalier, superficial… The kind who doesn’t have a thought stay in her head too long or else she needs a nap, right? I’ve always been fascinated with her, though. And don’t roll your eyes at me. I can feel it. It’s just that…given all of her detestable attributes, she’s never alone. You know? I kind of envy that. Okay, I really envy that. It feels like shit to be alone. To be in a place full of people and feel like they don’t want you there. To feel like you’re at a party you weren’t invited to. No one even knows your name. No one wants to. No one cares. Are they laughing at you? Talking about you? Are they sneering at you like their perfect world would be so much better if you weren’t there, messing up their view? Are they just wishing you’d get the hint already and leave? I feel like that a lot. I know it’s pathetic to want a place among other people, and I know you’ll say it’s better to stand alone and be right than stand in a crowd and be wrong, but... I still feel that need all the time. Do you ever feel it?

The Official Punk 57 Summary:

how I acted like I wasn’t. I knew he didn’t mean it, but I do know he’d be happier still having the one child of his he had a good relationship with. With me, what does he have? But I can’t let him go. Annie is in him, she’s in this house, and we’re her family. We have to stay that way. “We’re never going to have a relationship like you and she had, but I’m here.” I stand up and quietly start clearing off the cluttered table, heading to the kitchen to do the dishes. Ryen, on the other hand, would talk about the problems she had at school, how she wanted to be the most popular and beloved girl in her class, to be cheered on, and to be loved. As it turns out, Misha couldn’t hold up any longer without seeing Ryen and he took a leap of faith and went to see who his muse truly was.

This story follows college student Hannah, who’s great at everything except romance. She has no idea how to get her crush to notice her.So, I figured I should start with the good part before starting absolutely bashing a book. Before I started, I thought about myself: “focus, Isadora, you must have seen SOMETHING good at least.” So, I came up with this list, and I’ll analyze it topic by topic: So just to set the record straight from our last argument, Kylo Ren is NOT a baby. You understand? He’s young, impulsive, and he’s related to Anakin and Luke Skywalker. Of course he whines! How is this a surprise? And he’ll redeem himself. I’ll bet you on it. Name your price. This story begins in the 5th grade when a young boy, Misha, decides to participate in a pen pal program. Masen grapples with his feelings for Ryen and the reasons he’s at the school. He’s torn between his mission and his growing attraction to her. He’s also haunted by memories of his sister, Annie, and the life he left behind. Penelope Douglas is a New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling author. Their books have been translated into nineteen languages and include The Fall Away Series, The Devil’s Night Series, and the stand-alones, Misconduct, Punk 57, Birthday Girl, Credence, and Tryst Six Venom. Please look for The Hellbent Series, coming next.

Masen unexpectedly finds Ryen in a compromising situation in her bedroom. Their chemistry is palpable, and they share an intimate moment. Their relationship is passionate but filled with secrets. After their intimate encounter, Masen leaves Ryen’s room, ensuring he isn’t caught by her family. Their relationship is still clandestine, and they both seem to enjoy the thrill of sneaking around. Ten smiles, and Manny seems to relax a little. He doesn’t answer, but I’ll call him later. He doesn’t trust us, and I don’t want to push him right now. Everyone gets busy eating. J.D. steals food off everyone’s trays, and I take out my phone and go to text Misha. I hope he doesn’t mind getting asked to prom. But then I think better of it and go to Google to find his Facebook. I’ve read so much about his life, and now I’d like to see it, I think. I’m guessing the last thing he wants to talk about is prom, but I’d like to put it out there sooner rather than later for him to think about at least. But as I type in Misha Lare Grayson into the search engine and scroll to find what I need, I’m suddenly lost in more information than I can handle. My stomach sinks, and my heart races. Oh, my God. The story of Pun 57 follows Misha Lare and Ryen Trevarrow. The two of them reside a mere town away, though they have yet to have met each other. As it so happened, when they were both in their fifth grade, they were paired up by manner of a misunderstanding – always a healthy way to begin a friendship. Bit of a Mess

See a Problem?

He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch. Sneaking into his family home, Masen overhears his father expressing regret about their strained relationship. The pain of losing Annie is palpable, and Masen’s guilt over not being there for his family intensifies. I stop and think as I pull my bottom lip in between my teeth, grazing the piercing there. “A little here,” I mumble, the lyrics turning in my head, “to cover the bags under your eyes, and some pink on your cheeks to spread the lies.”

Another issue I had was the portrayal of bullying. Ryen is a bully and so are all of her friends. Misha hates her for it yet he is a bully too. Your classic violent alpha male who thinks he is better than everyone else but isn't. I hated both characters with a passion. Not because they were antiheroes as the author puts it, but because their behaviour is praised by her many times. Tell me how it's good for a guy to call a girl a stupid c*** (among other things) and be making out with her the next day. How is that hot? How is he being all possesive and demanding and demeaning hot? It blows my mind. The rest of the male characters (save for two or three) were equally disrespectful and disgusting. Ryen sees the exchange and pinches her eyebrows together, probably wondering what my problem is. Oh, you have no idea. Alright, I gotta go. But yes, to answer your question, that lyric you sent me last time sounds great. Go with it, and I can’t wait to read the whole song. This does not happen in PUNK 57. Ryen is attracted to this mean behavior, despite herself, and the two of them have several sex scenes that have this really uncomfortable element that was also present in CORRUPT that is neither healthy nor entirely consensual (at least, that's how it felt to me). And it wasn't the fact that it wasn't 100% consensual at times that bothered me so much as the fact that Ryen seemed to be embracing this behavior as natural and something she needed. Example: at one point Misha/Masen breaks into her house while she's sleeping and catches her in bed naked. He assumes, naturally, that any woman who is naked must be entertaining male company, and makes an effort of looking around for that Other Man. When he realizes that she was actually masturbating, he asks her if she was thinking of him. Me, I'd be on the phone with the cops well before that point, but she lets him watch. Ew. He's also constantly getting physical with her and making her feel bad about herself, whether it's berating her for being fake or criticizing her clothes for being too sexy - because how dare she bring male attention upon herself. Like it's her fault for them looking or some BS. In keeping with this "me man, woman mine" caveman attitude, the sex is always big man alpha sex, of the cervix-slamming variety (you know the kind I mean) and I know some people enjoy this, and that's fine, but that isn't my cup of tea at all. I rolled my eyes a lot. Especially when they try anal - without lube - and all she feels is a tiny burn. Ha! Woman must have Superman's butthole if he can go in dry and not cause her any pain, that's all I'm going to say. Would you like to know more about Misha’s cousin, Will, and his friends, Michael and Kai? You can visit them in the romantic suspense series, Devil’s Night. The first book, Corrupt, is available now at all major retailers. Please keep reading for an excerpt…

Are they laughing at you? Talking about you? Are they sneering at you like their perfect world would be so much better if you weren’t there, messing up their view? Also some of the conflict in the book might be a little contrived/cliche/predictable. Didn't bother me in this circumstance, but might bother others.
