About this deal

Remember: if you need to print something huge, you can always rescan your physical negative. Digital negatives. If you're in the market for a 3-400 film scanner, we'd recommend saving around 100 and looking at the Minolta Scan Dual 3 or consider spending more for even higher quality. This is one of the best discussion of the current state of scanning that I’ve found. Thank you, Dustin and everyone, for a helpful review and a great thread. Pacific Image advertises the PF10K scanner as a 10,000 dpi scanner so a lens rated at 3100 ppi optical resolution doesn’t seem to compare but Nikon is one of the only manufacturers that actually use accurate optical resolution figures so the test results might be a surprise.

Manual focus on PrimeFilm XA with ViewScan. Scanning and processing film negatives with PrimeFilm XA using SilverFast and ViewScan. Marketed as a scanner for both professionals and amateurs alike, the Plustek OpticFilm 120 is quite a remarkable piece of hardware. The unit feels hefty and solid; like I’m dealing with a pro-level machine. It’s roughly double the girth of my 8200i (and about four times as heavy), which isn’t bad for a dual format scanner, and its aesthetics aren’t anything to turn away from either. Longitudinal chromatic aberrations or LoCAs are ugly purple and green fringing seen in the out of focus areas in front of and behind the focus point of an image.LoCAs are common, especially with fast lenses, so chances almost all of your lenses have at least a trace, you just never noticed. The problem is that LoCAs are extremely difficult to correct with complex designs using special glass to fully correct the aberration, the Scanner-Nikkor for example has 14 elements, 6 of those being ultra low dispersion. To ensure that your first frame is positioned correctly, you may pre-scan it and make adjustments from thereon. However, a better way is to look into the little window directly at the negative to make sure that the edges line up. This way, you won’t need to wait for a scan to appear on your monitor. You will typically need to tap the ⏮ or ⏭ button so that the scanner lamp moves close to the film for better illumination.Setup. Flatbeds are cumbersome; DSLR rigs are painful. Dedicated scanners like XA are reasonably easy to move around and require nothing other than a power source and a laptop nearby. Sample scan file. I have a CoolScan V on loan, and own a Reflecta ProScan 7200 (in the meantime replaced with a newer model which is still available new today; in the US the brand name is Pacific Images), so I have been able to compare them using the exact same slides and negatives, using VueScan to operate both. The ones that you can get new today the software from what I read might be not as great but the scans comes out reasonably sharp. One could use 3rd party software. So why are CS going for such high prices successfully? One of the best features of the OpticFilm 8200i AI is its advanced SilverFast Ai Studio 8 scanner software, which helps optimize image quality and improve your workflow. It allows you to preview your scans without having to open other applications, enhance your images with different image tools, and offers easy and convenient options for organizing and sharing your files. Why We Chose This Scanner In our tests, prescanning individual slides took 29 to 54 seconds. Scanning a single image at the default 1,800 ppi—suitable for printing at 8 by 10 inches—took 33 to 42 seconds. With Digital ICE, the scan took about 2 minutes 20 seconds.

On the left is the PF 3600 PRO scan and on the right, the Minolta Scan Dual III scan of the same slide. Whilst the PF 3600 PRO features a higher resolution on paper, the Minolta shows none of the appalling image noise and also has better colour definition. How much dynamic range do you need to capture? A scanner’s ability to capture a wide dynamic range from film is referred to as Dmax. The larger the Dmax, more detail the scanner is able to extract from the deepest, darkest shadows of film. Resolution In terms of the figures below, especially for the Firewire times, the PF 3600 PRO appears a fast scanner. What these figures don't show is the time wasted waiting for the scanner to recover from crashes and this really damages any appeal the fast speeds could have offered. Size (Pixels) Stephen’s first customers may remember the film branded as Zorki Photo Mono with similar graphics. That was the name of his blog, which he started eleven years ago , marking his love for cheap but sometimes excellent Soviet camera designs . But by the time he launched his film, Stephen learned that Zorki is still a registered trademark in Russia. Consequently, he decided to respect by changing his enterprise’s name (even though he technically didn’t have to). As the owner of a Nikon LS-4000 (35 mm) and LS-8000 (MF), I'm in a good position to know the relative merits of scanning and copying. Suffice to say, I rarely use the scanners, because they're too slow to ever finish doing the slides and film I shot over the years but never scanned. From an altruistic point of view, I'd rather investigate using a camera, and pass along what I've learned to others, who may not have the means nor inclination to buy obsolete and generally non-reparable equipment.Scanner optics can make great macro lenses since they designed to produce images corrected at a higher level than a typical consumer market macro lens. This higher correction means images with little to no lateral or longitudinal chromatic aberrations, edge to edge sharpness, without distortion, all with minimal corner shading. Scanner lenses have very popular with macro photography enthusiasts over the last couple of years. Are there any high-performance, low cost, undiscovered scanner lenses out there that have not been discovered yet?

The PrimeFilm XE features a compact and lightweight design, making it a portable and space-saving solution. Its durable construction ensures longevity, making it suitable for long-term use. The scanner is designed with user convenience in mind, providing easy access to film loading and a smooth scanning process. Scanning Performance Also new is that the focus can be adjusted manually. The user defines a pixel on which the focus is set. Furthermore, the scan duration is shortened by a faster film transport, and the effective dynamic range has improved. The scope of supply includes the professional scanning software SilverFast Ai Studio 8 with infrared-based dust and scratch removal (iSRD) and IT8 target for automatic color calibration. Using slides, you can insert one at a time into the front of the scanner, there is no functionality provided for scanning APS films. Once you got your archival method ready, you will need to make some space for your scanner. PrimeFilm accepts film on one side and pushes it to the other, which means that there needs to be additional space around your machine. If you can’t handle your film by the edges without touching the emulsion, get nitrile gloves — don’t get cotton — it scratches film . For ultimate archival longevity, ensure there’s no finger oil, dust, or hair on the film negatives. Fortunately, James was able to get his hands on a Plustek OpticFilm 120 to demo. I’d already achieved stellar results with my Plustek 8200i, so I figured the OpticFilm 120 would be a cut above. The Pacific Image PrimeFilm XE 35mm Film and Slide Scanner offers a convenient and user-friendly solution for digitizing 35mm film and slides. With its ease of use, compatibility with multiple film formats, and efficient scanning capabilities, it is an ideal choice for film enthusiasts seeking a straightforward and reliable scanning process. Key Features

Longitudinal chromatic aberrations or LoCAs are purple and green fringing seen in the out of focus areas in front of and behind the focus point of an image.LoCAs are common, especially with fast lenses, so chances almost all of your lenses have at least a trace, you just never noticed. The problem is that LoCAs are extremely difficult to correct with complex designs using special glass to fully correct the aberration. Direct film scanning also captures additional dynamic range and more accurate colors than scanning from a photograph. If you’re a photographer who wants to convert your slides or negatives into digital format, you need a film scanner in your workflow. I’ve recently changed to a Reflecta ProScan 10T ( Pacific Image PrimeFilm XE ) because of the 4000ppi resolution on the USAF 1951 target, at 5000ppi resolution in MTF tests - https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64942982 The star of this test was the Nikon LS-3510AF lens, an awesome performer that costs less than the PF10K! WHAT I LIKEOverall, it’s another great scanner that you can consider if scan quality is more important to you than speed and convenience. Why We Chose This Scanner At 1500 pixels both lenses are sharp corner to corner. The scanner lens shows a bit more contrast and its interesting to see the different in color reproduction, both images were converted from RAW with identical settings. TEST CONCLUSION The magazine in this scanner can accommodate up to 50 slides at a time, letting you start the slide processing process while moving on to other tasks. The USB connectivity works well with both Windows and Mac computers, too.
