No longer is rum an old man’s drink or a measly component of mixed drinks. Rum is a standalone hero now. No longer does it lurk in the shadows behind its distilled counterparts, whiskey and gin. When the entrepreneurial Frenchman Alexandre Gabriel started the Maison brand, he set his sights on producing premium, quality cognac. Little did he know that he was going to introduce a revolutionary style of rum to the industry. The rest of the ageing period is performed in ex-cognac “Ferrand casks” in France. This rum provides a kaleidoscope of tasty tropical notes and the aroma of pipe tobacco too!

Plantation Grande Reserve is a blended Caribbean molasses rum that blends pot and column distilled Barbadian rums. It is then aged in Barbados’ hot and humid conditions, in casks formerly used for American whiskey and sherry. A Central American molasses rum, Plantation Gran Anejo, is distilled and aged in Guatemala in casks formerly used for American whiskey before being re-casked and further aged in France at Maison Ferrand’s Chateau de Bonbonnet in barrels formerly used for cognac for up to a year. Other ingredients you may taste in your pineapple rum include soft brown sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. You may also taste some additional sweetness if the pineapples in your rum were roasted or candied. Before the success of the Plantation Stiggins’ Fancy, pineapple rum was hardly a real concept. However, that would all change in the coming years, as several new producers started rolling out their own pineapple-inspired rums. So, what’s Pineapple Rum? You can even find newspaper advertisements from the 18th and 19th centuries advertising pineapple-distilled rum. All of this rum was being exported from the Caribbean.A beautiful copper color liquid coats the glass leaving long legs along the sides. The nose is similar to smelling the rind of pineapple to see if it’s ripe. Its earthy notes have some raw almonds and hints of pineapple. It’s not sweet. The palate gives away its young age; however, once you get past the slight alcohol burn, there are many flavors to explore. The first is butterscotch followed by cloves and bananas. The pineapple comes in late but doesn’t dominate the palate. Baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves) finish this rum in our throat and leaves a very satisfying warmth. We then added an ice cube to help balance the alcohol note. The rum significantly changed creating a hardier mouth feel and opening up the sweetness of the pineapple. If it’s more of a one off thing, I might split the base with some Plantation 3 star, or maybe even add a hint of Smith and Cross.
