About this deal

But this is also a story about ordinary people, ordinary conflict, and that's even more fascinating. This is a story about how good people can be led down bad paths, through fear, through hate, through manipulation. It's a story about individuals going astray, but also about whole populations being lied to, whipped up into a fanatical mob capable of terrible atrocities, or led to war against complete strangers because they've been taught to fear them. This is such a vital, powerful message and it is delivered in a captivating and enthralling plot with deep, complex, and ultimately likeable characters. the start of the book, however, again, not so great. This is, though, because one of the characters I really REALLY liked didn't appear for around the first half, which I found frustrating and annoying. This character was a main character in the first and second books and I thought they should have got much more recognition.

The critically-acclaimed Orphans of the Tide trilogy reaches its spine-tingling climax and dramatic conclusion. Perfect reading for fans of His Dark Materials or Vashti Hardy. Compellingly inventive and unpredictable, kept me guessing right till the end. Piers Torday, author of The Last Wild Compellingly inventive and unpredictable, kept me guessing right till the end. - Piers Torday, author of The Last WildPros: the revelation of the Vessel was intriguing and was what convinced me to read as far as I did. Unfortunately those sections were fairly spaced out. I would recommend this to anyone from about 10 years onwards because it’s a bit scary and might frighten young children.

Energetic and inventive . . . and with some startling surprises, this is also touching about friendship, siblings, loss and courage Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times I liked it, I guess what made it more MG than YA is "nicer" and not violent. Oh who knows. It would work for any age group. Orphans of the Tide, Struan Murray’s debut novel, is a great middle-grade read. I was drawn in immediately by the unique world-building. The novel is fast-paced, filled with action, and populated with delightful characters. The author of the Anastasia books as well as more serious fiction ( Rabble Starkey, 1987) offers her first historical fiction—a story about the escape of the Jews from Denmark in 1943.

The people believed what they were told to believe. They feared what they could not understand. The Enemy was effective because they did not understand what it was or how to over come it. It seems like human nature to fear the unknown. But to live in fear because of ignorance or because of herd mentality is dangerous. I had expected many great things from this book, but now I'm certain I shouldn't have expected those things.

Orphans of the Tide is an amazing book. It starts very suddenly when a girl called Ellie cuts open a whale to reveal a boy called Seth. Together, Ellie and Seth have to face the dangerous inquisitors to prove he is innocent. Murray's debut novel certainly didn't disappoint. The set-up grabbed me from the start; an independent female inventor living in the only city left in the world (after The Drowning) saves a mysterious boy who has just emerged from the belly of a beached whale... What a glorious conclusion to a thrilling trilogy! Struan Murray has done it again with Eternity Engine. Building upon the phenomenal world building of the previous two novels, the final instalment ramps up the excitement immensely and delivers exactly what I hoped and expected to read (given how good the others were!) Eternity Engine was filled with twists and turns and I was left guessing all the way – just how I like it. Orphans of the Tide is a truly outstanding trilogy, perfect for year 6 and beyond. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical MomentsThe energetic steampunk vibe overlies a thoughtful fable about compassion and justice New Statesman It's a middle-grade novel, supposedly aimed at children from the age of 9 upwards, but I'd say the sweet spot to read this would be age 12, in my opinion (although I have just thoroughly enjoyed it myself at age 20). It's got... not exactly gore, but definite mentions of blood and guts in places.
