Still, watching La La Land and Interstellar in the mode produces slightly more accurate colours and ekes out a smidge more brightness over the Home Cinema picture mode. I dig it. Watching the scene in 1917 (HDR10) where Lance Corporal Schofield runs across the field and there’s that slightly odd, fake cardboard 3D effect – the effect that plagued Ang Lee’s earlier high frame rate films – that hurts the naturalism of the G1’s images. Judder is visible with his legs, while the TV also struggles to bind its processing to hand movements. This effect is more noticeable the stronger the processing. Though more work is clearly needed, we rather like the new home menu overall and miss the pop-up row of apps less than expected. LG should also be applauded for finally overhauling its settings menus. The rather ugly and convoluted menus of before have been replaced by a system with larger fonts, a less severe white-on-grey colour scheme and a far more logical layout, all without sacrificing opportunities for tweaking performance. Amidst all that breathless praise, the LG G1’s audio performance is a rather qualified achievement. An advantage the Gallery OLED series has over the C series is its audio – its 4.2ch, 60W output is 20W more than the C1 OLED.

LG G1 OLED Evo (OLED55G1) review: Picture perfect | Trusted

Upscaling of HD sources is handled better than it has been before too. Bags of detail are added now without reducing sharpness or exaggerating noise. Even better, this detail and sharpness is added more intelligently, so that different parts of the picture are impacted by different upscaling rules. This results in more natural, lifelike results. The AI Sound Pro mode follows the lead of the AI Picture Pro mode by seeking to optimise incoming audio of all types to the capabilities of the TV’s speaker system – and it mostly works very well. It instantly increases the sound’s dynamic range; makes the sound project further away from the TV’s bodywork; gives the sound a stronger ‘forward’ presence rather than it appearing to only exist behind the screen; and takes on those big movie moments with plenty of guts and enthusiasm. But what is the Evo panel bringing to the table? By changing the OLED panel construction and adding a new luminous element – and combining it with the new Gen4 processor – LG says it has managed to create a ‘brighter, sharper, punchier image’. The luminance changes up between 35 and 55 degrees are quite dramatic, and that's certainly why the full five stars was out of its reach, but it keeps colours consistent. That said, there are instances where stronger TruMotion settings hit the spot. Watching the Spanish F1 Grand Prix on All 4 produced impressively grippy levels, ironing out the wrinkles in the image. With TruMotion off, the stutter of the broadcast was a distraction.

Contrast is impressively wide-ranging, and colours are dramatically conveyed, especially in Dolby Vision, the presence of which adds a lush, rich tone. It’s a close tussle between this and the Philips OLED+935 when it comes to their respective Dolby Vision performances, but I’d say the LG just edges it with its more natural look. The question of whether you should buy the G1 over the C1 will remain until we can test the latter, but the G1 takes the picture performance of last year’s GX and CX and improves upon it in almost every way without introducing any flaws. That makes it comfortably the best LG OLED that we’ve so far tested, and that is saying something. Dolby Vision is coming to Xbox Series X and S video gaming later this year too, bolstering LG OLED’s already pretty legendary reputation with high-end gamers. While not every aspect of the LG G1’s picture performance excels, there are aspects of it that take OLED displays to impressive places. It’s the best image quality I’ve reviewed on any LG OLED, and right up there with some of the best-looking images I’ve seen on any TV. Sound quality

LG G1 OLED Evo review (OLED65G16LA, OLED55G16LA, OLED77G16LA)

After all, the OLED G1 is providing a 10-20 per cent HDR performance boost to 2020 LG OLED TVs - which were themselves sensational performers. And that's actually a pretty remarkable achievement in a premium TV world now so good that even the tiniest improvements should be embraced like long lost relatives. To be more specific, AI Picture Pro can now recognise if an incoming image contains scenery, a cityscape or night footage, and locally ‘massage’ parts of the picture to enhance this sort of content’s impact and realism. Plus the new processor can look for skin tones and individual objects in the picture and subtly refine and emphasise them without impacting other areas of the picture. All with a view to creating an image that better reflects the way your eyes see the real world. For the majority of the time, provided you’re careful about how you set it up the LG G1 sounds impressive.
