When she was only 13, World War Two broke out across the globe. Elizabeth bravely served as an ambulance driver, and after the war ended, she fell in love with and married the charming Prince Philip. In 1952, she was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, and for the next 70 years she would serve as a beacon of continuity, looking after her subjects and serving the country she reigned over. The book touches on some of the influential people she has met throughout her 70-year reign and the positive impact she has had on others. The book also shows the importance of her marriage to Phillip and her dedication to her family, as well as the country. I would say she learned that lesson well, but the illustration certainly shows how many people serve the royal family. She was only ten years old. Being a queen wasn’t something Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, or Lilibet as her family called her, had dreamed about nor been prepared for. After all, she was born a princess, the granddaughter of King George. There were many others in line for the throne. Unlike her grandchildren today who are being raised in the shadow of what’s ahead, the first decade of Elizabeth’s life was carefree, with little understanding nor expectation of a royal destiny. I am a huge fan of the books in this series and I knew that this one was due to be released before her death on 8th September 2022 so it is just good timing that it has been released now so shortly after her passing but I think it is a book that will be really of benefit.As a former teacher, I immediately latched onto the possibilities for discussion of a various things that the book might promote. For instance, is being a queen as fairy tale wonderful as it sounds? What did she have to give up to fill the role of queen? What would you be willing to give up to reach your goals? How is someone prepared for such a role as they grow up? How would you feel knowing your every word, action, appearance, and even wardrobe (right down to the purse she carried) will be analyzed and reported on endlessly? How much freedom and power does a modern queen have anyway? How is it possible there have been more than one Queen Elizabeth in history? On a personal note, to instill interest in history, one might venture into creating family trees. Discovering you have royal bloodlines, however minute, is a way to make history personal and more interesting than a recitation of mere facts. And....so much more. As always, Vegara’s books have the best illustrations! This one kept my niece and nephew engaged and was the perfect springboard to further discussions about our new King, the succession and what it means to be a royal child. In recent days the U.K. and across the world, many have given thanks for her life of dedicated service. There is no doubt that her love of country life and animals never dimmed, and one of my favourite illustrations is this one, of her beloved Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She spent her summers there every year, and it was at Balmoral that she died in early September 2022. (This was being published before her death.) Best of all, the book shares a strong message about the importance of serving others. Instead of glamorizing Queen Elizabeth's position, the book shows that she had to make a lot of personal sacrifices to be queen. Her reign wasn't about satisfying her personal desires or making a name for herself, but about doing what her people needed.

I read this with my niece and nephew, and we talked about how our attitude can make all the difference in the world. The life, we celebrated at her Platinum Jubilee was one of overcoming obstacles, inclusion of others and lifelong service. I was excited to receive a copy about Queen Elizabeth. I think like many people, I wanted to know more about the Queen of the UK, after her passing on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96 years old. Elizabeth was always known for how seriously she saw her sense of duty to the people of her country. She served for 70 years which made her the longest reigning Queen in the world. She was also the most admired, which I just learned reading this book.

The illustrations deserve separate praise. There are plenty of corgis on them. Some pictures show altered familiar photographs - the Queen surrounded by her grandchildren and Mia Tindall holding her handbag. I can look at them over and over again. I absolutely love the Little People, Big Dreams Series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. I think her books are wonderful for children and expand each’s vision of life’s possibilities. Yet, her books are not just for children, I always love reading them as an adult. Every time I read about a person, I learn something new. Her parents and little sister used to call her Lilibet. To the rest of the world, she was Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary—King George’s granddaughter.”
