This was a funny wee detective story with a very absurd and unexpected protagonist. There’s lots of humour throughout, as you would expect from Frankie Boyle, but I enjoyed the layers of dark conspiracy that made up the mystery that Felix sets out to uncover. I tend to cherish my original cast recordings of Sondheim shows – although here he was purely the lyricist, with Jule Styne writing the score and Arthur Laurents the book – but this is one occasion where the revival outstrips its predecessor. Angela Lansbury was so forceful as Momma Rose in 1973 that you felt the character would have been a Broadway star. But Jonathan Kent’s 2014 Chichester production made total dramatic sense. Imelda Staunton was the eternal bustling showbiz wannabe, even popping up on stage during her daughter’s big audition. Yet when it came to the solo numbers that end each act, Staunton unforgettably suggested a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. When Portico’s mother tells him to go see what Zola is up to “in the meantime,” he thinks she says, “the mean time.” Why is “the mean time” a good name for what is happening in Portico’s apartment? Using words that sound alike to suggest a different meaning is called a play on words or a pun. Look for other times when Jason Reynolds uses a play on words.

Meantime captures the banal and lively existence of being Glaswegian like a seesaw that drops you into oblivion. There are many downs, but it’s occasionally peppered with some good. It holds a different kind of magic, one where the disappointment from the referendum eats at the shoes of people walking to work, hailing taxis, and people on serious comedowns in dingy wee flats that contain all the hope of a mouldy pizza sitting on the countertop. Felix McAveety’s life has always been the sad rendition of unrealised potential. The death of his friend, Marina, is the fuse to allow himself to care about something again. So, if you are looking to read this as a pure crime book, you might be disappointed. There are some great bits in towards the end but you've got to wade through quite a bit of unreliable drug-fuelled narration before that. Marina is dead, Felix is a suspect. But he also an addict - big time - and spends the majority of his life out of his head. So he could have done it, but he suspects not, he sort of has an alibi. He is our narrator and, as you can expect from a man of his "highs" the story is somewhat confusing in places. He also enlists several of his friends and associates to assist him in his endeavours to discover the real murderer as he believes that the Police don't really care. It jumps about and trails away, in ebbs and flows, which keep you engaged without having to pay too much attention. I enjoyed the entire story and liked the characters of Felix, Jane, Donnie, and Amy very much. I wish we'd had a bit more information about Amy earlier on, though reading to the end revealed an important plot point as to why this couldn't happen.

Try reading some of Stuntboy, in the Meantime out loud. What do you notice about the way the text sounds? Jason Reynolds uses figurative language when he writes, which you may recognize from reading poetry. Look for examples of internal rhyme, alliteration, similes, and metaphors. Divide your class into teams and search for other examples of poetic language in the book to see who can identify the most examples. What can you tell about the way the plot of each Super Space Warriors episode is structured? How do they begin and end? What causes the conflicts in the episodes? Once you have analyzed the formula for Super Space Warriors, create a new episode that uses the same structure. Oh and remember who the author is before you make comment about the language. Informed choice and all that jazz... That said, it was all in context. Why is Portico initially excited when his parents tell him they are getting two apartments? Give examples of specific ways that they demonstrate that they care and look out for each other.Although the central character of Felix acts as the narrator it is nigh on impossible to read his stream of consciousness and interior monologue without hearing the voice of Frankie Boyle in your head. There are quite frequent examples of industrial language, so if you find the use of profanities in your reading matter off-putting, then this is probably not the book for you. Against that there are some moments that are - perhaps somewhat surprisingly - quite poignant and there are also a number of sections that not only made me smile, but actually caused me to laugh audibly. The interference from my relationship channel was creating static on every other channel of my life. Never have I ever laughed this hard while reading a crime novel. With the novel’s protagonist Felix, Frankie has definitely injected him with much of his own sense of humor as well as his often fatalistic view of society. I don’t believe I’ve ever highlighted as many passages in one novel to send to friends than I have for this book. I’m very happy that my wife is also a fan of Boyle’s because I certainly said “Hey, can I read you this one part?” over and over again while reading next to her in bed. I’m on record as dubbing this, in 1980, “one of the two (My Fair Lady being the other) durable works of popular musical theatre written in my lifetime.” I should have added West Side Story but I stand by what I said since I’ve seen the show over the years work in countless spaces, big and small. From that first piercing industrial whistle, we are gripped by a revenge-drama that mixes rage at social injustice with romantic tenderness. All Sondheim’s emotional complexity is there – Hal Prince’s wife once said there was a touch of Sweeney in Sondheim himself – and his brilliant score has echoes of Britten, Copland and Stravinsky. Wherever it is staged, we still attend the tale of Sweeney Todd. Even now I'm finished I'm not entirely clear if Marina was murdered, who killed her or if Felix even unravelled it (it seemed much more likely to be the work of the ex-cop who seems ridiculously willing to help a man who can't keep his eyes open half the time.

In your opinion, what makes them such good friends? How do they demonstrate that they care about each other? Which superhero does Portico decide he wants to be? What does he choose as his superpower? What do his choices tell you in regard to what Portico cares about? I'd give it 7/10 if I was able. I'd say I enjoyed slightly over two thirds but the other third appeared to simply be a manual on what drugs to take and when and what they did to our protagonist. I have a suspicion that there will be a strong correlation between people's attitude towards Frankie Boyle in general and their opinion of this book. The author can be something of a Marmite character and I suspect readers may react in a similar way to this novel.
