About this deal

A redesigned hopper that has steeper angles to help feed beans down the chute for speedier grinding.

The Fellow Ode is well designed to be durable and compact. However, it has not stood the test of time. But given that Fellow is reputable for producing high-quality products, we expect nothing less of the Fellow Ode Grinder.

Burrs: The Ode Gen 2 comes with the Ode Gen 2 burrs installed. The Gen 2 burrs have increased extraction from light-roasted coffees. the grind range is from 250 microns and higher. The Gen 1 burrs are 550 microns and higher. REDUCED GRIND NOISEFrom high-quality materials to ditching the noisy gearbox, Ode was designed with quietness in mind. This grinder is a tad messier than others in its class. It seems to be prone to static, which leads to bits of chaff floating about or collecting where you don’t want them. For an easy solution, try the Ross Droplet Technique ( 1).

The Fellow Ode Grinder is quite stunning, having the usual Fellow aesthetics. It is remarkably compact, with a measurement of 4.25″ by 9.5″ by 9.5″. You shouldn’t have a problem fitting this grinder on your bench. However, its portability does come at the cost of a bean hopper. The Fellow Ode Grinder is designed such that it is a single-dose grinder. Hence, it can only hold a maximum of 80g of beans. After getting comfortable with the machine and running through a couple pounds of beans for a good season, I did some Fellow Ode cuppings vs my Comandante. I tested primarily with lighter to medium roasts. The Comandante brews have more flavor but also more acidity; currently I'm enjoying the balance of clarity and flavor in the Ode+SSP brews the most. Its giving me a flavorful cup that's got acidity without being too sour, along with prominent and enjoyable flavors of fruit/nut/chocolate. If I throw a little cream (it tastes good, sue me) into a good South American coffee it's almost like I'm drinking a hot chocolate. New Internal Hopper Design: The internal design of the bean hopper is designed to allow a better flow of whole beans into the grinding chamber. Some users have ran into issues with beans jamming up their burrs. Again, this is an issue that seems more prevalent in earlier models that I've never once experienced in 3lbs+ of beans through the grinder and can't really comment on. Measurements were done with Jonathan Gagne's app, pictures taken with a DSLR, and lens correction applied with Photoshop. Note that these densities are weighted by the grind size assuming mass proportional to volume, same as the grind size app. So it's not the number of particles of a particular size but rather the mass of the coffee found in grounds of that size. Used the same numbers/formulas as that app so these measurements aren't without their caveats. However I think the relative comparisons are still useful. From the eye test, the stainless steel burrs are of high quality and designed to last. The grinder is also flexibly designed for ease of cleaning and repairs in case it gets faulty. Ease of Use To fill the Fellow Ode Grinder with coffee beans, simply lift the lid and add the amount you need.

No more waking up your roommates. From high-quality materials to ditching the noisy gearbox, Ode was designed with quietness in mind. As we stated earlier, the Fellow Ode brew grinder was designed for manual brewing methods- and it does an excellent job at what it is intended to do. It is not designed for espresso and so does not grind fine enough for that. When looking at grinders, the big 3 contenders for me around my price point were the Fellow Ode + SSP Burrs, OE's Apex Hand Brew Grinder, or another Baratza Vario. Ultimately from my research I went with the Ode + Burrs. Right out of the box, this is a sexy AF grinder. I want to leave my grinder on the counter, and most of them are eyesores. I really hated looking at my Vario every day. It is ugly, simple fact. For some people, this isn't a concern. However just like people take looks into consideration when purchasing kitchen countertops, a car, or other appliances, I want my stuff to be appealing to look at; especially if it is sitting on my counter 365 days a year.

You can watch Steven from Home Grounds compare the Fellow Ode to other grinders at various price points in this fun video: Grinding Capability – 3.5/5 It’s pretty expensive. If you’ve got a tight budget for your coffee grinder, it will likely not fit into it. A larger hopper that can hold 100g of beans, enough for 12 cups of brewed coffee at the golden ratio of 1:16. Larger Hopper- The updated grinder has a larger 100g hopper, compared to the original 80g hopper. This is to cater to batch brews.

The Fellow Ode Grinder is very easy to use. To grind, weigh out your beans, select your preferred grind setting, and press the start button. One of the very outstanding features of the Fellow Ode grinder is its auto-stop function. The grinder can detect zero resistance in the burrs and automatically turn it off. I spent some time with my SSP burrs and the dry erase marker over the weekend and as far as I can tell, there's no obvious uneven wear occurring when the burrs chirp. One potential difficulty with the marker method and the SSP unimodal burrs is that edges of the burr aren't perfectly flat. That is, the burrs only rub on the raised edges rather than uniformly across a smooth surface. The coffee grind cup has a magnetic base that pairs with a second magnet on the grinder to snap correctly into place.Trusted Source Coffee | The Nutrition Source | Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Coffee lovers around the world who reach for their favorite morning brew probably aren’t thinking about its health benefits or risks. The Gen 2 Brew Burrs grind finer and with more precision. The broader grind range is exceptional for every brew method except espresso. With new anti-static technology for less grind mess, a redesigned load bin for smoother bean feeding, and an expanded 100-gram catch cup for batch brews, the next generation of grinding is here. Your coffee maker comes with a built-in grinder: If you already have a burr grinder, there’s no reason to succumb to the hype and buy the Ode. Save that money, and treat yourself to some specialty beans instead! The Verdict Fellow spent two years in development to bring you the next generation of the Fellow Ode Grinder. From the finest pour-overs to the coarsest cold brews, your coffee will never be the same again. Note: r/coffee would not let me post there. He doesn't believe r/coffee should be a place to discuss coffee. Since this review does cross over into the grinder's application for espresso I figured I would comment here.
