About this deal

When time is of the essence, Drylok’s cement hydraulic dry mix is worth consideration. This mix sets within 5 minutes, making it suitable for patches in a variety of masonry surfaces. However, if they continue to increase in size over time then this can be the sign of something much more serious such as structural issues.

Structural issues can come in quite a range and include things like the fact the ground supporting the foundation, path, slab etc. is sinking, the foundation supporting the given structure, path etc. has failed or the fact that the concrete mix that has been used to create the object isn’t strong enough and is now failing. If you’re filling smaller spaces or just don’t want the potential mess of powder, ready-mixed paste is the best solution. It’s practical and can be reused – just make sure you seal it tightly after use. However, paste is more expensive than powder and will already be pre-mixed in precise ratios to a particular consistency. Wood fillers – These are generally formulated with wood fibres to help make them suitable for wood repairs. There are also a variety of specialist fillers on the market, such as ones suited for outdoor use. Some of the more common ones are:An applicator gun is required to apply this filler which can be used internally or externally. Decorators caulk is like flexible filler in a tube, can be squeezed into corners and tidied up by wetting your finger and running it over the bead of filler. Choice one is not plausible given that even the finest mortar or concrete mixture will clog in small crevices, so choice two it is. However, whereas epoxy is a resin-based compound, latex is rubber-based. Due to this it does share very similar characteristics in that it produces a solid, water tight finish and also that it remains flexible. As we have stated above, your best bet is to go for an epoxy repair mortar as this will generally give the best results. Pretty much all compounds will include instructions on how cleaning should be carried out in their instruction so follow them closely.

Powder filler is the most practical choice if you have a lot of surfaces to prepare. It’s cheaper than ready-mixed paste and you’ll get a lot of filler out of one bag. The main downside is that you need to prepare it before use by mixing the powder with water. Another issue is that once you’ve finished with the prepared filler, you can’t reuse anything that’s left over as it will just dry out. When using epoxy repair mortars, the hardener is tipped into the resin aggregate and (for ease) a mixer paddle is used to get a good, uniform mix. It takes about 4 – 6 minutes to mix a 20Kg tub of epoxy mortar. As most repair compounds are quite fast setting, regardless of what they are; epoxy, latex or cement based they will need to be prepared and mixed with either water or a specific hardener before they are used. Many but not all liquid caulks, sealers, and patches come premixed. Dry mixes require water, followed by hand mixing until they reach the desired consistency—which could be a combination of the manufacturer’s recommendations and how runny you need it to be. It’s best to follow mixing directions as closely as possible, but you can thin the mix with a minimal amount of extra water if absolutely necessary. The ARDEX Concrete repair range offers essential products for the professional tradesman, allowing for the rapid, non-structural repair of concrete, renders, and screeds. The range includes: Masonry repair fillers – These are designed for outdoor use and have high mechanical strength, as well as coping well with the elements. This product should NOT be split. Taking smaller quantities from each tin, even if measured correctly, may cause issues with activating. Exterior concrete areas including driveways, courtyards, parking areas, walkways and domestic garages:

Bob Vila has been America’s Handyman since 1979. Once you have completed the above steps and you are happy with the repair, it can be helpful to cover the area over with polythene (a bin liner will be suitable) to ensure that it cures correctly without any disturbance. Once cured, all epoxy mortars are as hard as nails and it will last you a lifetime

Filling Cracks and Repairing Holes in Patio Slab Joints

Moisture resistant fillers – Designed to cope with humid environments, such as kitchens and bathrooms. However, in many cases, the user isn't entirely sure where they will need to use the wood filler, so it may be more beneficial to opt for a light-colored, general-purpose wood filler that is resistant to water, dirt, and dust. This makes it possible to apply the wood filler almost anywhere and have it be suitable for the task. In addition, the light color means that it's easily paintable to match the wall, ceiling, or baseboard, or any other surface. For holes of less than 50mm it is best to use an ordinary epoxy repair mortar. This repair mortar has a much finer resin aggregate and fills any voids in a much more complete way. In this instance DIY Doctor has used brown boot polish to colour the filler to a light brown but many other colours can be achieved using the same method. Resin based materials are usually hard to clean and the solvents used to clean them are pretty harsh on the hands so take care when using such cleaners and wear gloves, masks, eye protection etc.
