A generator must always be used outside because of the danger from exhaust and carbon monoxide. Always place it downwind and make sure the fumes do not go directly into other camping units. You will probably need to have a ventilated housing to shield it from rain and help keep the noise disturbance low. Do not forget the exhaust end of the generator will get very hot and can be a hazard to children and animals and give risk of fire if it is near long grass or other flammable material.

How much power?
The available power from continental hook-up points will often be less than the UK and a supply as little as 5A or 6A is common. Tents, caravans and motorhomes are welcome on the electric grass pitches, each measuring 10m x 8m and allowing up to four guests and units of up to 6.5m x 3m, without guy ropes. For those staying in a larger unit, the large electric grass pitches allow up to six people and are 12m x 8m in size for units of up to 8.5m x 5m in size, again without guy ropes. Different appliances draw different amounts of current. A domestic kettle is power-hungry but you can get a low-watt camping kettle. Also, be careful of running devices at the same time. For example, when using the kettle, you may avoid overloading the supply by turning off a heater. Fuses used in plugs should be the size recommended by the appliance manufacturer. Before you replace any blown fuse you should establish what the cause is and never increase the size of the fuse above the rating specified. Caravans and motorhomes also have the option to opt for one of the fully serviced hardstanding touring pitches.
