I enjoyed the interactions of each of the characters ,each so different to each other, and the house that seems to have a character all of its own. This is a thrilling and emotional novel about belonging and family secrets, and how we find ourselves at times when we feel the most lost.

I always look forward to a new Eve Chase novel and The Birdcage didn't disappoint. Time and place are evoked with subtle perfection. Complex sibling rivalries and secrets, the past rubbing up against the present, make this a must-read Chase classic. I couldn't recommend it more highly -- E.C Fremantle, author of The Poison Bed In the spirit of Lisa Jewell and Kate Morton, an emotional mystery set in the rugged remote landscape of north Cornwall full of dark secrets and twists, about three unusual sisters forced to confront the past. Any issues with the book list you are seeing? Or is there an author or series we don’t have? Let me know!Eve previously worked as a journalist and bestselling contemporary fiction author under the name Polly Williams. She lives in Oxford with her family. The paintings depicted in this novel are ones that I would love to view. They would tell the story in a visual and evocative way. Similarly, there’s a wealth disparity between the sisters that impacts them, with Kat and Flora both enjoying a high standard of living, and Lauren living a less privileged life with her mother. As children, this leads Lauren into befriending Gemma, the daughter of the house cleaner, and the imbalance plays out in that relationship as well. Chase uses a subtle hand with these conflicts, but they pay off in the end. The "twist" was also very disappointing. I'm pretty sure I actually rolled my eyes, not because it was that predictable but just because I was so uninvested in the characters or story. I think it was the writing that made it hard to connect; it was flowery where it didn't need to be and detached where it could've had more spunk.

I adored this beautifully written, riveting mystery. Chase is peerless in her ability to stitch together dark secrets and tantalising twists with unforgettable characters and enthralling imagery. I am a die-hard fan! Rosie Walsh, bestselling author of The Man Who Didn't Call It was an unsettling read at times but also perfectly displayed the complexities of sibling rivalries and familial love. Another great book from Eve Chase that I would definitely recommend. The Harrington family takes her in and disbelief soon turns to joy. They are grieving their own horrible tragedy and this gorgeous baby fills them with hope, and lights up the house’s dusty and dark corners. Desperate not to lose her to the authorities, they keep her a secret, suspended in this blissful summer world where normal rules of behavior, as well as the law, really do not appear to apply. There was another man in the picture. Don Armstrong was once Walter’s best friend but had his eyes set on Jeanie, and she was also in love with him. Don never cared whom he heart broke, and at Foxcote Manor, their illicit affair was obvious. But one of Jeanie’s kids found a baby in the woods, and the family took it in as their own.The complex relationships between three half-sisters, their mothers and their artist father are painted with compelling psychological depth in this extraordinary and gripping masterpiece. The treacherous Cornish coast is the setting for a cleverly narrated unravelling of the past and the myriad ways in which it has shaped the present. It's like an Old Master portrait that gives away more secrets with each viewing. Eve Chase's best novel yet - and the bar was already sky-high -- Gill Paul, bestselling author of Women and Children First

Apart from the occasional classic, I have rarely felt the urge to read a book twice…beautifully crafted mystery is a delight that I want to experience again and again' - The Stylist As the daughter of a librarian Jen's love of books started from a very early age. Her reading obsession continued throughout her teenage years when she studied both English Language and English Literature at college. I didn't care so much for the characters. When reading a book like this I have to at least love one character. I just felt like I didn't connect with them. And it’s at the point of this “confluence of sisterhood” that Eve Chase’s talent for creating imagination stoking atmosphere really began to shine. Her ability to place us right inside of her breathtaking locations, as if were no longer reading, but existing inside the story. This, as is the case in Chase’s other works of story manifests itself in the large and small things. Here were just a few: Sublime writing, secrets, lovable characters I didn't want to leave, and a ripping plot twist that kept me guessing. An absolute jewel of a bookImmersive, tense and ultimately redemptive, while I was reading it held me completely in its grip.' Sarah Vaughan The Daughters of Foxcote Manor” is the third stand alone novel and was released in 2020. Outside an isolated manor house in an idyllic wood, one baby girl is discovered.

The Birdcage by Eve Chase - Fantastic Fiction

This book continuously fell just a hair short of what it was trying to be. I wanted to write out a long detailed review, but the truth is it's just fairly forgettable. The characters are boring and come across as one dimensional despite what should be really interesting dynamics between them.

Retailers:

The Birdcage focuses on three estranged half-sisters, Flora, Kat and Lauren. They are all the daughters of Charlie Finch, a still life painter. His only famous painting was called Girls and the Birdcage, which depicted his daughters sitting on a couch next to a birdcage. It was painted in 1999, the year of the eclipse. However Jesse finds herself at odds with her fifteen year old stepdaughter, being increasingly isolated in their sprawling new home, and haunted by the odd rumors which surround this manor. The Birdcage is a show-stopping novel - beautifully written and atmospheric, with a cast of fascinating, brilliantly realised characters whose story kept me absolutely gripped....one of the only writers I would drop anything for.'
