The series reinvented the super hero and 40 years later stands as one of the influential works in the comic book artform. This first-ever Omnibus edition collects MIRACLEMAN BOOKS ONE through THREE, complete with a massive trove of covers, original artwork and rare features. For the third arc, Moore wanted a single artist to illustrate the work - feeling that while all of the artists on Book Two had been capable the chopping and changing had left the story with an "uncertain" tone. But what I’m saying is, these are basically the Alan Moore Thematic Greatest Hits, and he’s firing on all cylinders with them here. I really loved reading about 90% of this. His attentiveness to the characters and world is on point and feels very similar to his approach to Swamp Thing, which he would begin writing shortly after this with some of the same artists. The series grows and morphs as it continues, at first reading as a fairly straightforward but above-average superhero comic, before turning into a treatise on the human reliance on the divine. Most artists wrestle with slight variations of the same theme throughout their lives. Alan Moore is no exception. While Miracleman is one of Moore's first major works, he's basically playing the greatest hits here: there's government conspiracy, superhero deconstruction, fascism, übermensch mythology, and no fewer than two major plot points that revolve around rape.
