About this deal

The Jaybird X3 wireless sports headphone is smaller than the X2, has improved battery life, costs less and sounds excellent for an in-ear Bluetooth headphone. It's sweat resistant and comes with a compact protective carrying pouch. There’s also a little extra energy in the treble compared to some at the price, which again makes the sound more engaging and lively. The tuning isn’t audiophile-grade stuff, and with some music the treble can shuffle over into slight sharpness. However, this is not the kind of sibilance that crops us whenever a vocalist sings a word with “s” in it. The Jaybird X4 earphones are not particularly fatiguing.

Jaybird X4 review - SoundGuys Jaybird X4 review - SoundGuys

This really is a fabulous pair of sports earphones on the whole, and the flaws we’ve mentioned are comparatively minor for what is otherwise a superb wireless offering at a stellar price-point. Double press the power button. The LED will flash rapidly and you should hear a double tone. Your buds have now been reset. The Jaybird X4 earphones juggle the audio priorities of sporting earphones well, and are well-suited for daily use. They have some extra bass energy and power, very welcome during runs and gym workouts. But not to the extent they sound juvenile or bloated. My Freedom 2 buds keep turning off or my music device keeps stopping after I connect. What do I do? Jaybird’s new style of in-ear fins may not suit all ears. But they do ours, and make fitting them easier than previous generations. We would comfortably recommend these to gym junkies, audio purists and average Joe’s alike (don’t worry, you’re special in your own way), and while waiting for Bluetooth connections to improve their reliability is an option, at this price it isn’t worth missing out. It remains a shame that the headphones can store only one profile, though. As with the Freedom, I’d love to be able to toggle between different profiles directly from the headphones. I tend to prefer a more bass-heavy sound when lifting weights, but a more serene one when zoning out on a 10K run. Jaybird X3 – Sound Quality

At this price, the Jaybird X3s could do with a little more refinement and texture in the mid-range. Sound quality offers a good mix of an exercise-friendly tone without going overboard. And the companion app lets you thoroughly customise the character of what you're hearing. Jaybird does need to work on improving the response speed of the remote, though.

What’s in the box?

The buttons on the newly designed remote are responsive and easy to operate blindly. Sarah Tew/CNET Their sound quality is solid and energetic, but a richer sound can be found for less money. Good for fitness freaks, but only decent for the rest of us. The big upgrade for the 2018-2019 Jaybird X4 is advanced water resistance. An IPX7 certification means these are among the most sweat and weather-proof earphones in existence. My Jaybird Tarah Pro earbuds keep turning off or my audio device keeps stopping after I connect. What do I do? The fin-style securing method is a god-send for the bespectacled user, as over-ear and on-ear headphones can end up being painful or just incompatible altogether with the arms of your glasses. They also work deceptively well at keeping the ear-pieces secure when moving about.

Jaybird X3 Bluetooth Wireless Headphones Compatible with iOS

They low-end does have a good degree of punch to it, but those who prefer their bass to slap them round the face may find it a little reserved. Instead, the X3s are clean and clear, with good treble detail. If you’re experiencing issues with your buds like connectivity, audio, and distortion, or connecting to the MySound app, you may want to try resetting your headphones. The MySound app mentioned earlier also allows for plenty of customisability to mix things up to your taste. Fit and ruggedness are at the heart of the Jaybird X3s’ design. Other than solid Bluetooth reliability and a reasonable 8-hour battery life, the tech isn’t at the forefront. There’s no aptX or NFC support, for example. Like the Jaybird Freedom, the new X3 can be used with the Jaybird MySound app on iOS or Android. This lets you customise the sound profile using EQ settings. So if you prefer a little extra bass or tighter treble, that’s up to you. Changes you make are saved directly to the headphones, so they’ll follow you to whatever device you pair them with and you’re free to uninstall the MySound app.MyTune ultimately proves Jaybird has done a very good job with its own default “flat” tuning. However, the ability to tweak some of its limitations is welcome. Verdict With a sweat-proof design, lightweight and compact build, and plenty of methods of securing them, the X3s are well equipped to handle the rigours of physical exercise — the actor voicing the power-status and battery-percentage alerts even sounds like the vocal embodiment of activewear. Please note: The Firmware Update Assistant will have a software version. This is different to the headphone firmware version. The Jaybird X3s have some clever features that stop them from being prone to water damage or being ripped out of your ears. As such, they’re good for active types. After using them for a few weeks, we’ve completely bedded into this style. Only after comparing to the slightly more restrained SoundMagic E11 did we remember that extra low-end punch was there.

There’s real zest and energy, favouring clarity over booming bass. It means you’ll have to carry around the dedicated charging clip rather than just a more ubiquitous micro-USB cable. Earlier this year, Fitbit unveiled its very first smartwatch, the Ionic. That was certainly the biggest news to come out of the August announcement, but the company announced another product which flew under the radar. The Fitbit Flyer is the company’s first audio product, and it’s aimed squarely at what are currently the best workout earbuds on the market, the Jaybird X3.

The Beyerdynamic Byron BTs have a smoother, more characterful mid-range, making the Jaybird X3s sound a little cold in comparison. Rhythm and dynamics are solid, though.
