Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) review | TechRadar

This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (21.8 ms). From the outset, it’s clear that Huawei has wanted to create a mid-range laptop that has a design you’d expect to see in more expensive laptops. It’s a great idea, actually. Let the likes of Dell, Apple and HP fight it out over making the most powerful (and expensive) laptops in the world, while diligently redefining what we should expect from an affordable mid-range laptop. Meanwhile, the screen is too dim and washed out compared to other laptops at this price point, and the battery life of less than four hours for regular use is frankly disappointing. The average temperature for the upper side under maximal load is 33.8 °C / 93 F, compared to the average of 30.7 °C / 87 F for the devices in the class Subnotebook.Data comes from Huawei labs, by comparing the performance of the HUAWEI MateBook D 15 (R7 5700U + 16 GB, Performance Mode) with its previous generation (R7 3700U + 16 GB). Actual data and performance may vary depending on product configurations and measurement methods.

Huawei MateBook D15 (2021) review: A thoroughly decent laptop

The good news is that Huawei’s 2021 MateBook D15 seemingly fits these stringent requirements. It’s a straightforward no-frills laptop with decent dimensions, decent build quality, a decent specification and decent design, and it’s all yours for a decent price. Did I say it’s generally quite decent? Huawei has done something a little different with the MateBook D, fitting it with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor rather than an Intel chip. We’re all for offering consumers more choice, but AMD is gearing up to release its Ryzen 4000 series of chips, which promise big performance gains over the 3000 series – including the Ryzen 5 3500U. With the MateBook D 15, Huawei has succeeded where many other manufacturers fail for a great number of reasons. The D 15’s CPU does not throttle down even when it is running on battery power. Here, the processor will keep running at full speed until the battery dies. Because of this, the energy consumption is slightly increased. However, why would you buy a powerful processor if you never intended to put it to good use? Moreover, Huawei has implemented a cooling solution that is tailored specifically to this type of hardware, and this is why the system produces so little noise. means opening up new connections between your devices. Sync up your phone screen to the MateBook screen Huawei even keeps the weight of the power adapter down to 159g, and it’s a slimline affair that’s more akin to a phone power plug. Even the top prong of the UK plug slides down to make it easier to stow. You’ll probably want to sling it into your bag, too, as the MateBook D 15 only lasted for 5hrs 50mins in our video-rundown test.

Manager 12.0.2 or later support this function. If you have any questions about this feature, please There are, of course, plenty of differences in the design – and some of them even work in the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020)’s favor. Using a fingerprint to sign in to Windows 10 is a great feature, and the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) has the added bonus of including tech that reads your fingerprint when you press the power button. Your fingerprint is securely saved as the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) boots, and then used to log into Windows, so you don’t need to press it a second time. It’s a little thing, but it’s a nice touch and makes using the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) a much smoother experience.

Only certain Huawei mobile phones, tablets, monitors, and certain Huawei laptops running PC Manager 12.0.2 or later support this function. More successful is the Huawei Share feature. This is an NFC badge the allows you to tap a compatible Huawei phone and seamlessly swap files between it and the Huawei MateBook D 15, as well as view the phone’s screen on the laptop. You don’t buy a Core-i5 laptop without discrete graphics for gaming but I still ran our usual Metro: Last Light Redux and DiRT: Showdown tests, and at native screen resolution (again, in Performance mode) they managed 33.5fps and 36fps respectively. This really isn’t all that bad and shows that a little light gaming certainly isn’t out of the question. At a reduced 1,280 x 720 resolution, Doom ran smoothly enough at between 40 and 50fps depending on the level of onscreen mayhem. Of course, it’s not quite as nicely designed as a MacBook, but it’s certainly one of the best looking mid-range laptops we’ve seen. AU Optronics AUO28ED tested with X-Rite i1Pro 2Maximum: 271cd/m² (Nits) Average: 256.1cd/m² Minimum: 2.6cd/m²In this age of ultrabooks, ultraportables, 2-in-1 convertibles, hybrid gaming notebooks and tablets masquerading as laptops, is there much to be said for a traditional bog-standard laptop? Huawei adopts a multi-supplier strategy for certain components. All components comply with Huawei's standards. Actual products in local markets should prevail. PCMark 10 Modern Office sessions, with the authentic 65 W charger and cable used, the battery level at Mode provides an instant boost to CPU and GPU performance, which may result in louder fan noise and Battery life has taken a gentle stroll along the path to virtue compared to the previous model. The capacity may be the same at 42Wh, but the i5 model lasted for 7hrs 10mins in our battery run-down test, compared to just 5hrs 50mins for the old Ryzen 5 machine. That’s still not a great result, but a boost in performance is always welcome.
