She just wants to help others, and she succeeds. Her chapter on anxiety is really good (says this person with a lot of anxiety); loved her reminder that “all small terrors pass.” Also stellar is her chapter about a bizarre but legit treatment for depression (which involved doctors applying magnets to her head—I kid you not). Oh, and besides her head stuff, she has big physical ailments, too, like rheumatoid arthritis. She goes through a lot. Detective Lou is a great invention, although I don't recollect if he is on loan from another Winslow novel. If not, he deserves more room, he needs to be let out (like me in my confinement) and have his own novel. Just what this horrible year needs right now is the return of Jenny Lawson, who is really the ONLY author ever to make me LOL so hard I cry, blow milk out my nose and pee my pants, all at the same time. I've now read all four of her books, and this is something of a return to the full power she exhibited in her first classic ( Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir). Crime 101 is a clever, well-plotted little cat-and-mouse story about a cop and a career thief chasing each other up and down the Pacific Coast Highway. ★★★★I'll start by speaking of these stories as a group before getting into them individually. It's really an incredible collection and I highly recommend reading it. Winslow shows all sides and taps his biggest influences in these works and it's well worth reading. This is also a treat for fans of his who have read his previous books. There are cameos by some characters from previous novels, some of these tales are stories that are entirely about a character or cast of characters from previous books and best of all, since many of these characters live in the same worlds and similar places, sometimes they overlap. It's a real treat to revisit characters you came to enjoy in other books. Broken is the darkest and most brutal story in the collection. A tale of violent revenge in New Orleans. ★★★★★

Oh brother, this is one funny and creative woman! My god! If I could shove this book in your face right now, I would. A review can’t do it justice. I took forever to start this review because I kept rereading chapters—and let me tell you, I seldom do that. Too much new stuff in my queue. Time is precious—so who wants to do re-reads? But I could not resist. BROKEN: SIX SHORT NOVELS, as the title suggests is 6 novellas, all of them excellent. The only one that didn't quite fill the bill for me was the Hawaiian one, but that's most likely because I haven't read the original book in which these characters were featured, (SAVAGES). Not yet, anyway. But what do I have to say about these complaints? I don’t care, I don’t care, I don’t care!! Lawson is a comic genius, like I said, and I absolutely loved getting to be inside her weird head. So there are a few stories I didn’t love? That’s just the way the cookie crumbles. This book still goes on my absolute favorites shelf. Broken by Jenny Lawson oscillates between a real heart-wrenching picture of what it's like to live with depression and anxiety and an uproariously funny collection of observational and awkward humor. I loved both parts of the book equally, though the writing style and some of the chapters felt repetitive towards the end of the book.I decide to keep the broken dove even though I can already hear Victor in my head telling me that she’s too broken to save. I will nod and agree but I still won’t part with her. She will tell a story to people who will wonder what magic she must have if she’s still treasured even in this state. Recommend to: all my chronic illness peeps and those who love a good bawdy joke. Bette Midler fans. Jenny: Let's change "butt" to "buttonhole." Editor: Are you sure you want to do that? Jenny: Oops, that was autocorrect. I meant let's change "butt" to "butthole." There were a few sections about this book that were really good. I think her open letter to her insurance provider should be printed out and everyone should be made to read it (especially politicians and law-makers). I also liked the sections where she talks openly about mental health and chronic pain, because those are things that should be normalized, and the more people do that, the more natural it seems. The cringe compilation she got from her followers sharing some of their top embarrassing moments was also pretty great-- although in that section, the humor really wasn't hers. Bits and pieces of the writing in other sections wrenched a smile or a raised eyebrow but overall, this was a miss for me.

And being a Winslow story, there’s a good chance surfing will play a factor. Also, another character from one of Winslow’s novels, Bobby Z. To me, one of the most challenging aspects of clinical depression is not being to explain how it feels. I cannot emphasize enough how validating and exactly-what-I-needed-right-now this book is. It isn’t written to a specific, clinically-depressed audience, though. Ms. Lawson bravely speaks to absolutely everyone. Even those with brilliantly-balanced chemistry will be amused by these anecdotes. This was a little too cliché for my taste and about as complicated as it’s similarly titled cousin, the film Taken. Jimmy and little brother Danny McNabb are both cops in New Orleans. Jimmy is violent and angry while little brother is gentle and does volunteer work at a center that gives care to abandoned chihuahuas and Yorkshire terriers, or something like that. Not much went into the little brother character.Number four features a character from Winslow’s novel Dawn Patrol, Boone Daniels,as well as several other characters, and a bail bondsman working on chasing a skip.

The San Diego Zoo brings some much-needed comedy with this story of a young cop trying to arrest a gun-wielding chimp. It was genuinely funny and even sweet in parts, but still sported Winslow's cinematic style. ★★★★★ Jenny's books do good by helping others who suffer from mental illness. Jenny writes about being on a book tour and meeting wonderful people who dealt with some of the same issues she had. Many folks shakily told her that it was the first time they'd left their house in weeks. Jenny was proud to be able to talk to each person, though it was VERY draining for HER, because she gets anxious being around people. A difficult conundrum indeed. Sunset is a story that was written to include Winslow's "Dawn Patrol" characters like Boone Daniels. This is a good story and it's fun to spend some time with the gang again. The story is good though perhaps not to the quality level of others in this collection, it only suffers in comparison that way-on it's own, it's fantastic.
