My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. YES YES YES!!!! It is just SO GORGEOUS!!! I am going to buy some copies to give friends with young kids as presents! But even if you don’t have or know any kids, the illustrations are just so beautiful and the book would make a wonderful addition to any book collection! LOVE IT! This is a great book for 5-8 year olds which encourages them to use their knowledge of the alphabet and the animal kingdom to try and guess what animal is coming up next. Shortlisted for the D&AD Awards 2019 | Winner of the Chen Bochui International Children's Literature Award. King-Chai’s illustrations are enchanting with great splashes of colour with the scenes perfectly matching the animals depicted with forest scenes, water scenes and desert scenes. I first created this fun animal alphabet for my oldest daughter when she was a toddler for her and her friends. I then developed it to be phonetically correct and started, on request, to paint personalised bedroom name pictures using the animal letters as presents for friends and family. As you will see, each letter of the alphabet is formed by an animal whose name begins with that letter. One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading.
