book itself: great, wasn't bothered by the typos and found them infrequent (granted, i got the second printing, dunno how much changed)

Sawbones (a novella) – STUART MACBRIDE Sawbones (a novella) – STUART MACBRIDE

Science News was founded in 1921 as an independent, nonprofit source of accurate information on the latest news of science, medicine and technology. Today, our mission remains the same: to empower people to evaluate the news and the world around them. It is published by the Society for Science, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) membership organization dedicated to public engagement in scientific research and education (EIN 53-0196483). Ezra had asked the porter about her; he said she was a girl who cried apples and pears in the street who’d got caught under the wheels of a runaway timber wagon coming down Fish Street Hill.Catherine Johnson is a children’s novelist of Jamaican and Welsh heritage. She was born in London and much of Sawbones is set there. She writes stories with diverse characters in the middle of the action – including Ezra, the protagonist of Sawbones, who is a mixed-race former slave. If I had to find one thing to criticie it is that they clearly tried to stay away from sensitive topics for the most part, as was the case on the early days of their show. The most recent practice that is criticised is Homeopathy, and even there they do not go after contemporary practitioners as much as they could. Other topics I would love to see given this book treatment are anti vax movement, and other currently practiced psuedscientific and fake medical practices.

A compelling, often hilarious and occasionally horrifying exploration of how modern medicine came to be!

as a sawbones/mcelroy fan, i was suuuper excited for this! and i wasn't disappointed. the book for this was stunning - i flipped through and read sections. it's well formatted and full of typical mcelroy humor. i'm gonna copy and paste this and review both editions.

The Sawbones Book: The Horrifying, Hilarious Road to Modern

Ever wondered how one might treat a baby with colic? An alcohol-chloroform-morphine concoction. Or about a lady who just loved the taste of that raw, cholera-infected water in 1854 South London? Or the poor and unfortunate fate of alligator parts? The Sawbones Book: The Hilarious, Horrifying Road to Modern Medicine is here to bounce from topic to topic, with some shorter interludes for weird medical questions from listeners/readers, all infused with jokes and asides that leaven some particularly gruesome and gory medical scenarios. Sawbones is the story of Ezra, a young apprentice surgeon – or ‘sawbones’ – working in 18 th century London. When his master is killed, he meets Loveday Finch, who is looking for answers about her father’s murder. Together, they must discover what connects the two deaths, and why a mysterious organisation called the Ottoman Embassy may be behind them. Excellent. This is a great SoW and has so much in there which is just great. Thank you for sharing this. You are brilliant! Kakalurks! The latest victim is Laura Jones. Sixteen years old. Pretty. Blonde. And the daughter of one of New York’s most notorious gangsters.

For a small book, this was filled with MANY descriptions of surgeries and body studies, and I did not mind it one bit. If anything, I enjoyed it to the fullest, and learnt even more about medicine in the past. I loved the characters so deeply, and will forever carry them with me. I loved the setting, the aesthetic, the twists of the plot, the writing, the inspiration from the Hunterian museum AND the mystery. Humans took a long, weird road to modern medicine. We don’t have everything figured out yet, but at least we’ve learned not to drink the feces of cholera victims and never to plug dental cavities with a lizard’s liver — unlike some of our ancestors.

Sawbones Book by Sydnee McElroy, Justin McElroy | Waterstones

Wondering whether eating powdered mummies might be just the thing to cure your ills? Tempted by those vintage ads suggesting you wear radioactive underpants for virility? Ever considered drilling a hole in your head to deal with those pesky headaches? Probably not. But for thousands of years, people have done things like this—and things that make radioactive underpants seem downright sensible! In their hit podcast, Sawbones, Sydnee and Justin McElroy breakdown the weird and wonderful way we got to modern healthcare. And some of the terrifying detours along the way. The Sawbones Book is exactly what it advertises: a delightful tour of medical history, the things we as a species have gotten right and the many, many wwe have gotten wrong, with humorous commentary among historical and medical facts. If you enjoy medical history and are looking to dip just a bit more deeply, or if you have a passing interest and like the occasional dumb joke, then you can't go wrong with this book. This is a fantastic adaptation of the podcast - it maintains the exact tone and humour that is so iconic to all the McElroy media, and I hope that having it available as a book now will introduce many more people to Sawbones who were perhaps not into the podcast format. It should be noted, for those who have listened to the podcast, that the book is mostly retellings of topics that have been discussed on the podcast. This is by no means a bad thing, and of course it's not at all a transcript of the show, but I wouldn't want people to go in expecting entirely new content. However, if like me you've been listening to the podcast for a while then it may be have been some time since you heard about some of these stories and will enjoy this refresher. I liked this book a lot, it’s a great romp for YA readers and wonderfully written, a great diverse read. I love the natural formation of the trio who I hope will get up to many more adventures! What about a magic belt that one could wrap around themselves, turn on the battery and you had a solution for nausea? Mummy meat crumbled into tinctures to stop bleeding? Well that a few of many of the disturbing things one will read in this book. It does have a few things, like some of the uses for honey, that has a certainly validity to this day. The one downfall of the book is the ending is too neat and tidy, but there is scope for a second nook or a series. How does one translate a comedic in tone, factual medical history podcast to a book? The result was not what I expected, yet much much better!
