The album includes one of the group's best-known songs: a cover of Neil Young's " Only Love Can Break Your Heart". The cover quite differs from the original in that the original's mostly major chord progression is turned here into mostly minor, which emphasises a more melancholic feel. It is also arranged in 4/4 (as opposed to the original's waltz time), with a driving piano-bass-drum section. Andrew Weatherall later remixed the song to further emphasise the dub bassline; this remix was featured on both releases of the single and on the compilation Casino Classics (on American and European versions of the single, a Flowered Up remix is erroneously featured instead of the Andrew Weatherall mix). The follow-up single "Kiss and Make Up" was also a cover version, of a song written and originally recorded by The Field Mice. Ian Catt was the engineer/co-producer on both versions. According to the interesting preface in this edition, Norman Collins was the author of sixteen novels and two plays, none of which, save London Belongs to Me, is worth remembering. Which makes the book even more noteworthy because it is a complete gem of a novel in almost every detail. As Glinert observes, it would scarcely last him a week and, regrettably, the wall-mounted vessel encompassing this gallery of delights slips her moorings, thus precipitating one of the novels’ finest comic moments. When the medium Mr Squales trips over a stray tin of salmon on the stairs, the adenoidally challenged Puddy explains apologetically: I re-read this book every five years or so, and never grow bored with it. My only sorrow is that there was no follow-up! How did Mr and Mrs Josser end up? Did Bill survive the war? Did Mr Puddy burst a button (or three!) when he was given his medal for bravery? What happened when Percy Boon left prison?

Norman Collins (1907-1982) was a British writer, and later a radio and television executive, who was responsible for creating Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4, and became one of the major figures behind the establishment of the Independent Television (ITV) network in the UK. In all Norman Collins wrote 16 novels and two plays, including London Belongs to Me (1945), The Governor's Lady (1968) and The Husband's Story (1978). I was able to take some time from the daily hours of studying to read this one. Great decision. It's terrible how much time I can lose from reading just because of uni. At one point in “London Belongs to Me,” Jacquelyn Middleton describes a love scene in a play written by one of the characters as “veering towards diabetes inducing.” Well, that gives the love scene a definite edge on “London Belongs to Me,” because this treacly, cliché-ridden book is so firmly in diabetes territory, I actually vomited while reading it. I mean, there’s a chance that could have been actual food poisoning (thanks, Olive Garden!), but I’m placing the blame fully on Ms. Middleton. Mr Josser shook his head. So far as he and Hitler were concerned they seemed to get along without telling each other anything. Lucy and Freddie (the friendships): Alex's friendship with Lucy and Freddie was well developed, we are able to see how close they become in every chapter. I loved reading about these three together. Although this book is more suited to younger readers due to the age of the character, it is well written. I did enjoy experiencing the awe of visiting London through a young American’s eye especially witnessing the differences between the two countries.

My first completed book in the month of May! I meant to finish it in April but that clearly didn’t work out due to college. 😒 Alex Sinclair is an aspiring playwright who can't wait to get on a plane and leave Florida behind for London. She believes London is where she truly belongs. This is where her favourite TV programmes and plays are. Mr Puddy just puddies along from one low status job to the next, never abandoning his briefcase, a relic of his better days as a dairy manager and a badge of his former respectability (in which he now bears his array of, mostly tinned, delicacies to and from work). Ted, Mr Josser’s married son, personifies mediocre respectability: on becoming manager of the Co-op hardware department – one of Orwell’s ‘five-to-ten-pound-a-weekers’– he thinks his six pound five a week at thirty-four is as good as it gets (Doris gets four as a typist and Josser Senior two for his pension). Through the charlatan Squales, we are introduced to a minor constellation of astralists: the South London Spiritualist Movement and the South London Psychical Society as well their transpontine rivals, the Finsbury Park based North London Spiritualist Club and North Kensington Spiritualist Union.
