About this deal

I have observed that people who have been Christians for twenty-two years often have less of the life of Christ in them than those who have been Christians for only two years. Why? Because the former group has been Christians for twenty-two years, while the latter group has been Christians for two years—repeated eleven times." And yet I was still proud, defensive, distant, not present, unable to connect relationally, conflict avoidant, unaware internally, and unloving. This disconnect is what led to the birth of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship. Your expectation is unconscious. You didn't even know you had an expectation until it was violated.

Incorporating emotionally healthy spirituality into your life can greatly enhance your relationship with God and those around you. Our ability to grow as disciples and human beings depends on our response to grief and loss. Jesus was fully God, but also fully human, and he models for us the struggle and the treasures available for anyone brave enough to face ‘loss’ God’s way.Practical, proven strategies that have been developed over a 28-year period spent both in the local church and in equipping leaders around the world

This workbook is Part One of the Emotionally Healthy Discipleship Course that also includes the bestselling books, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality and Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day . Join us for a powerful journey that will walk you through a door that will change forever the way you love God, others, and yourself. However, it’s important not to let fear control you or prevent you from living your life to the fullest. Emotions and Spirituality Christian spirituality, without an integration of emotional health, can be deadly—to yourself, your relationship with God, and the people around you. (7)It is about being vulnerable and authentic with yourself and others. The Journey Towards Emotional Health Despite a promising title, the cover of the book had a few red flags: "Unleash a revolution in your life in Christ!" I don't really know what that means, despite it being the sort of phrase of buzzwords that has surrounded me for years, and the words "unleash" and "revolution" paired with "life in Christ" made my skin crawl. The tagline on the front, "it's impossible to be spiritually mature, while remaining emotionally mature" had a cadence that made me read it exclusively in the voice of a movie trailer narrator (and now you are too. You're welcome). Without this skill, church teams remain silenced - unable to speak truth and creating the conditions for an environment of frustration, resentment, and judgement. By integrating biblical principles into our lives, we can cultivate emotional resilience and maturity. Recognizing emotionally unhealthy spirituality and embracing emotional health are crucial steps towards achieving emotional maturity and managing your emotions effectively.

Eventually God awakened him to a biblical integration of emotional health, a relationship with Jesus, and the classic practices of contemplative spirituality. It created nothing short of a spiritual revolution, utterly transforming him and his church. The book presents a “radical truth…a simple but profound reality”, referring to the concept that emotional health and spiritual maturity are inseparable. But, this life changing truth comes without a Scripture reference. It is indeed a valid point that the two are connected and related. But, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality errs however in placing it’s hope in this concept, that emotional health and contemplative spirituality combined are the key to fixing things. He states, “…if we do the hard work of integrating emotional heath and spirituality, we can truly experience the wonderful promises God has given us—for our lives, churches, and communities. God will make our lives beautiful.” He goes on to quote Gal 5:22, and to expound upon the fruits of the Spirit. But this passage in Galatians is a call to walk by the Spirit (v16) instead of the flesh; Scazzero’s application of this text to deal with emotional health. Trading the call to walk by the Spirit to emphasizing emotional health, we are left to walking a fine line of a sort of prosperity gospel: follow the seven steps and you will be blessed. And the journey begins by quitting. Geri quit being afraid of what others think. She quit lying. She quit denying her anger and sadness. She quit living someone else's life. When you quit those things that are damaging to your soul or the souls of others, you are freed up to choose other ways of being and relating that are rooted in love and lead to life. There is no greater disaster in the spiritual life than to be immersed in unreality. In fact the true spiritual life is not an escape from reality but an absolute commitment to it. (135)

Near the end of the book, he encourages the practice of two specific disciplines--the daily office and the Sabbath--to grow in our understanding of God and understanding of self. Attention to God and delighting in his creation are essential practices that we too often hurry past. It never entered my mind that God might be speaking to me in the “feeling” realm in a way that did not compromise his truth. How could I listen to my desires, dreams, likes and dislikes? Wouldn’t they potentially lead me the way of rebellion, away from God? Peter Scazzero learned the hard way: you can’t be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature.
