Common brands of epoxy resin are Envirotex Lite, Easy Cast, Amazing Clear Cast, Little Windows, and ICE Resin. Doming, Coating, and Casting Resins Air-dry clay is not food safe and it should be used for decorative purposes only. There are some sealants available for air-dry clay pots that are food-safe, but even if these are applied we would not recommend using air-dry clay for eating or drinking. Can you wet air-dry clay while sculpting?

When buying a sealer for air-dry clay you have several options available. The most commonly seen being; For traditional pottery made with pottery clay, the creations need to be fired in a kiln to cure and properly seal. Once the clay has been cured, it’s generally safe to use with water and food.

Doodlecraft

You have three basic options when you seal air-dry clay. You can brush on the sealant, spread it with a sponge, or use a spray-on varnish. There are pluses and minuses to all three methods and the best to use is largely a matter of taste.

Measure the two parts into a marked medicine cup. Don’t dump out the first part before adding part two. Just add it to the top, using the correct lines on the cup. (eg. pour part A to the 10ml marking, then add part B to reach the 20ml mark) Try to use measuring cups that don’t have little tabs around the inside bottom. That makes it hard to scrape out the resin.Getting started at my first attempt with the crystal clay I was careful to read the instructions properly and followed them throughout, but as I said earlier, this product is so easy to work with that there wasn’t a whole lot to follow. There are really only two very important factors to take into consideration; one is to wear the gloves provided with the clay as the epoxy resin can cause irritation to some people. I value my hands too much to ignore this instruction and wore the gloves throughout the whole process. And the second is to mix the parts in equal quantities otherwise the finished clay will not set properly. There are many ways to seal air-dry clay, including coating it with common white glue. The best method to seal it is with one or more coats of polyurethane varnish or an acrylic sealer. Both can be had in gloss, semi-gloss, and matt finishes and provide a non-porous coating. Can you microwave air-dry clay? Air-dry clay offers more glazing options than polymer clay or traditional clay that you would use for pottery or ceramics. Unlike, polymer clay, air-dry clay is not sensitive to the components used in aerosols, or oil-based varnishes. EnviroTex Lite Epoxy Resin

To get a complete cure with epoxy resin, you need to thoroughly mix perfect proportions. You’ll have less error if you mix up larger volumes. So save up several items so you can pour them all at once. Everyone has their own favorite ways to work with a material, but here are some tips that have worked for me. Any holes or missed patches in the varnish seal will weaken the water resistance and make your pottery more susceptible to water damage. Acrylic Or Water-Based Paints An excellent sealant and varnish for a wide variety of crafting applications, Vallejo Polyurethane Varnish is water-resistant, provides UV protection, and has a beautiful finish. Comes in gloss, matte, and satin formulas.Varnish (sometimes called glaze or sealer) is just wood varnish or the varnish that’s used to coat acrylic paintings. On wood, it soaks into the fibers to form a super-durable surface. On polymer, however, it merely forms a super thin skin on the surface of your clay. A popular brand of varnish is Varathane. I also like a newcomer on the market, Brite Tone, that you can read about in my article here.

There are also opaque and tinted sealants available or you can create them on your own by blending clear sealants and paints. The Mod Podge will also give you a layer of protection in case you need to wash the pottery piece in case of spilled food or liquids or an accumulation of dust. 4. Tips For Applying Sealant To Air Dry Clay If your item is fairly smooth and you want a glass-like shine, any resin can give you this effect. Thin coats of brushed-on resin work well for this, too, but only if you have already removed the surface flaws. Brushing resin overa bumpy surface will just accentuate the bumps. Due to its delicate and absorbing nature, air dry clay can never truly be waterproof. However, there are seals and finishes you can apply to air-dry clay to give it a water-resistant quality. It won’t be able to hold water for a long period of time but will withstand a rainstorm or light washing. Also known as Kato Liquid or Kato Sauce, this liquid has the consistency and appearance of thinned white glue. To use as a varnish, apply a very thin coat with your finger or a brush. Allow to level, then bake. After baking, you will need to use a heat gun to make the thin layer of clay crystal clear and shiny. Fimo Liquid

Resources, guides & advice from the jewellery making experts

After polyurethane water-based varnish comes acrylics. Acrylics are great for projects that will be displayed indoors and are not likely to receive many bumps. It is also ideal for earrings and similar crafts that may be exposed to skin oils but little else. Many tend to cloud if exposed to moister and they may yellow over time. They are very economical though.
