About this deal

We believe that the great Gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in Him is Justification; that Justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood; by virtue of which faith His perfect righteousness is freely imputed to us of God; that it brings us into a state of most blessed peace and favor with God, and secures every other blessing needful for time and eternity. Author Susan Wise Bauer writes with an engaging narrative style that depicts the old way of passing on oral history. She loves to dive into interesting tad-bits about famous people and average people alike so you can be immersed in the story. Her books do not read like a traditional textbook at all, and I would categorize SOTW as more of a living book than even MOH. Then and Now Bible Maps is an amazing resource for showing how the names of the countries in the Middle East have changed over time. It has clear overlays with modern maps to lay over ancient maps. Really cool and very eye-opening for the kids! Ancient writers describe a fantastic series of gardens constructed at the ancient city of Babylon in modern-day Iraq. It's not clear when these gardens were built, but some ancient writers were so impressed by the gardens that they called them a "wonder of the world." Around 250 B.C., Philo of Byzantium wrote that the Hanging Gardens had "plants cultivated at a height above ground level, and the roots of the trees are embedded in an upper terrace rather than in the earth."

Mystery of History includes plenty of map work options, hands-on activities, timelines, quizzes, and other work to extend the learning for each lesson. All of this is optional. The main component is to read each lesson, only adding in the activities or work that you want to add. Some days all we did was read the lesson and add to our timeline. Other days we took more time to dig deeper. As the kids got older, they may have written a summary or done an oral narration of the lesson. History from creation to our modern times are covered. No time period is left out in this series of history books. Living Books by Grade/Age Level for MOH Volume 1– Tracy’s Treasury – I love that this list covers living books. This is great for the Charlotte Mason Homeschooler. We are reading through the main text of Mystery of History Volume 1, and also using most of the optional resources: Week 8: Lessons 22-24: Amenhotep IV and Nefertiti, Tutaknkamen (King Tut), and Ramses II (The Great) Before his ignominious death, Kidd captured and plundered many ships. But the one of that got him in hot water was the Quedagh Merchant, a Moorish trading ship laden with gold, silver, silks, satins and other treasures from India. Kidd claimed it was a legitimate target, given it was controlled by the French. But it had an English captain and Indian merchandise, and the Moghul emperor at the time threatened to close off trade routes for the East India Company in response, Reuters reported. Literature: We will focus our literature reading on books written during or about ancient times. Some will be classic works, and others will be historical fiction. Volume 4 Timeline Figures –, Karl Marx, and George Washington are just some of the figures that you’ll find in this set of timeline figures. The timeline figures cover both world history and American history.

And the MOH curriculum makes it very easy to do this because at the end of each lesson, the optional assignments or activities are divided out by level. So, you can clearly see which activities your younger children will do and what your older children can be responsible to accomplish. Middle school students could use it as a spine and jumping off into more research or reading or writing about the content. You could definitely use this curriculum to teach multiple ages together from K-8, requiring more analysis or written work from your older children. We personally didn’t keep using MOH during the high school years. We’ve started using Notgrass curriculum for 9th-12th grade. MOH review

The Companion Guide has extensive suggestions for creating a timeline or a timeline notebook. The timeline-creation process can be as simple or complex as you wish. This illustration, "Captain William Kidd in New York Harbour, 1696," by Jean Leone Gerome Ferris, shows the infamous Scottish privateer charming women onboard his ship, the Adventure Galley. (Image credit: PhotoQuest/Getty) The Companion Guides are huge and I can’t believe this information used to be included in the textbook! Here’s what you’ll find in the Companion Guide for each volume:

We believe that the Law of God is the eternal and unchangeable rule of His moral government; that it is holy, just, and good; and that the inability which the Scriptures ascribe to fallen men to fulfill its precepts, arises entirely from their love of sin: to deliver them from which, and to restore them through a Mediator to unfeigned obedience to the holy Law, is one great end of the Gospel, and of the Means of Grace connected with the establishment of the visible church. Thursday: Review the three lessons and do Wall of Fame (timeline) and Somewhere in Time (Geography) Introducing scientific concepts in the context of history, the days of creation are used as a structure through which a wide variety of scientific topics are introduced, including: light, energy conservation, air & water, botany, the solar system, zoology, and some aspects of human anatomy and physiology.Plus, it was created to be used by large families with children spanning from 1st grade through high school. This means that you’ll find extra research activities for older siblings and plenty of hands-on projects for younger kids. We finished Volume 2 in about nine months. This year, we did 4-6 lessons per week. Normally, I don’t try to beat the calender, but two of my students were set to graduate by May, and we wanted to finish the book before then. Our next two volumes will go a little more slowly. Copywork

There are some resources that we will use throughout this study, all the way to modern history. You’ll see them mentioned in specific lessons. However, if King Arthur did really exist, the reality was likely less magical. The earliest surviving accounts date to the ninth century and tell of a leader (perhaps not even a king) who fought several battles against the Saxons; even the accuracy of these accounts is debatable. The Mystery of History Volume 3 discusses the Renaissance and the Reformation. It also covers the Growth of Nations. The years covered in volume 3 are 1455 – 1701 AD. While this is essentially a study of history, it is also a Bible study of sorts with an apologetic flavor in spots. Near the end of the Volume I: Student Reader is an adaptation of Campus Crusade’s booklet used for leading people to accept Christ. A letter to students at the beginning of that book directs students to it if they don’t already have a relationship with God. Volume II: The Early Church and the Middle Ages Here’s an inside peek into the Mystery of History curriculum and how we’ve used it over the years. What is Story of the World like?
