If you have a high-pressure system, you will have a higher flow rate. Therefore, you can consider larger shower heads and have two or more appliances running at the same time. High-pressure water systems work well with mixer, electric or digital showers without the need to install a pump. This is because the water pressure will be strong enough already. A combination boiler, or combi boiler, as we will be referring to them from this point onwards, heats water as and when you need it rather than storing hot water.
Unlike an exposed valve shower, a concealed valve shower is built into the tiling of your shower enclosure. This creates a sleeker and less cluttered appearance, which is good for modern or more luxurious bathrooms. Typically, all that will remain visible is a neat control panel and your shower head. Like with any shower type, the cost to install a new shower unit will vary depending on the make and model. You can fit an electric shower directly over your bath or in a cubicle. Either way, make sure you leave enough room around the shower to remove the front cover for future servicing. Finally, if the worst happens and your boiler fails, you can still have a hot shower! And the downside?
The main benefit of an electric shower is that you only need a cold water supply. If you have a tank fed system with low water pressure and you don't want to go to the expense of a power shower or mixer shower with a dedicated pump then it can be a good choice. If you are replacing an existing electric model and don't want to go to the expense of ripping out the tiles and putting in new plumbing for a hot water feed then they are the way to go.
A mixer shower differs from an electric shower by needing an existing source of hot water. To output at your perfect temperature, a mixer shower does just what its name suggests - it mixes your hot and cold water together before sending it out of your shower head for you to enjoy! Thermostatic showers use a system of internal valves combined with a sensor that detects changes in water temperature. The shower unit regulates the hot and cold water before it leaves the shower head, preventing scalding or dramatic changes in temperature. Electric showers work well with combi boilers too, although they aren't considered the best option. An electric shower will keep working if your boiler were to fail, thanks to the water being heated by the shower system itself. This can also happen when the boiler automatically turns off the hot water once a certain temperature is reached. Investigate the preset temperature valve to determine if this is the case. Usually these are set around 43 degrees celsius to prevent scalding.
Power Showers are simply mixer showers with a built in pump. If you have a combi-boiler or a high pressure (unvented) hot water system then you probably don't need anything more than a standard mixer shower. If you have low hot water pressure then a power shower may be a good solution. Although a thermostatic mixer shower with a dedicated external pump will give you more water flow if you want a really strong shower. A hot pipe of around 15mm diameter is suitable for use with a combi boiler. If it is much bigger than that, you can use reducers to bring the size down and make it compatible. Cut off switch: If you forget to switch the shower off when the water runs out the shower has a cut off switch for safety reasons and to stop the shower from burning out. So, to recap - if you have a large supply of hot water which works via a gravity fed system and you’re finding your water pressure leaves a lot to be desired - you are the perfect example of why you should have a power shower!
