About this deal

Finally, you get more options for float (natural foot rotation while you ride) and release angle (the point at which it actually disengages) than you do with SPDs. More on this below. Performance My bicycling friends told me that the quality pro standard then I should aim for was a pair of Crank Brothers brand shoes with egg beater style clip-in pedals. At around a hundred dollars a pair, they're a significant investment, but they've been so worth it! Most road and mountain bike pedal axle diameters are standard. You can easily mount Eggbeaters onto a road bike. But if you get seriously into road biking, you’ll probably want pedals, shoes and cleats made for road biking. Again, it depends on the type of riding you do. If you plan long rides, or racing, then yes, weight it super important. Each component can be reduced to give an overall weight savings. When you’re climbing a hill in the last half hour of an all day ride, you feel those extra grams, believe me.

Crank Brothers has been around since 1977. They started out in a Laguna Beach garage. Just surviving as a MTB gear maker is a huge accomplishment, let alone being a big name since the ‘70s. These guys are true industry pioneers. hanley79 - So Crank Brothers is a good brand? I'm looking into buying a pair of these, and since they're really expensive like you said, I want to make sure I get the right pair. While there are several ‘systems’ of cleats/pedals, the primary ones to look at are SPD, Egg Beaters, and Time ATACs.De Crankbrothers Eggbeater 3 pedalen zijn lichtgewicht en duurzaam doordat dit pedaal gemaakt is met zeer degelijke materialen. De as is gemaakt van 435 Chromoly-staal, en de body en veer zijn ook gemaakt van gesmeed RVS. Dit zorgt er voor dat dit pedaal ondanks zijn beperkte omvang ontzettend stevig is.

There’s a reason pro riders are obsessed with how much their bike weighs. Nobody wants to be lugging around extra metal when going full tilt on a race course. If you’re a beginner, sport or expert mountain bike rider, Eggbeater pedals are an attractive option. They’re light and work great. I dig their sleek profile. Their shape makes them look like cake mixer blades, hence the name. Having a platform is a good thing if you pre-unclip and rest your arch on the pedal during dismounts, but I’ve been pre-unclipping at high speed on the non-platform Crank Bros Eggbeaters ever since they were first introduced. It is, however, advisable to add some material to your shoe arch. Finance is subject to application, financial circumstances and borrowing history. I do like the Candy platform because it provides me with some stability, but it can cause mud to accumulate around the pedal. This is not a problem you will have with Eggbeaters. Both Eggbeater and Candy pedals are multi-sided so that you can clip in quite easily. PROS If the terrain you ride is somewhat extreme and requires big hit jumping, then Eggbeaters are not your best bet. Crank Brothers actually makes a wide range of other pedals for more abusive activity like downhilling. Is there a bodyweight limit for Eggbeater pedals? One can be relatively well-assured that Crank Brothers pedals are going to work well, given that the majority of American pro CX racers and thousands of amateur racers use them. My egg beater clip-in pedals are made from brushed aluminum and brass. Since they're well-made, they come apart pretty easily to clean off grit and mud. The Eggbeater 3s also come with spacers you can add to the pedal spindle in case the recess is too shallow, which could particularly be the case if your shoes wear down and would cause the shoe to rattle on the pedal. As it was, my selection of Giro and Shimano shoes and boots sat just fine with the Eggbeaters, as they do with SPDs.Crank Brothers has been making a bunch of cool components and accessories for years. They have a stellar reputation in the MTB world, including cross country and downhill. Plus, they sponsor a bunch of riders on the pro circuit. I think the brand is awesome. Flat pedals are designed to work with the right shoes. If you are wearing sneakers, there is very little chance that you will notice any difference between cheap, plastic pedals and some fancy DH flats. One of the coolest things I see at the races are pit bikes. These are bikes with regular flat pedals that mechanics use just to get around. Since bike mechanics are on their feet a lot, they don’t want to be standing on cleats. Does Crank Brothers have a good reputation as a component brand? The Crank Brothers Candy 3 pedals are just like the Egg Beaters, but with a little bit of platform around the ‘egg beater,’ which results in their being dual-sided. These pedals are certainly an option to consider for cyclocross, but they do not perform as well in mud as the Eggbeaters. My Crankbrothers cleats attached to my Giro Privateer shoes. Over thousands of miles, they’ve worn a groove into my footbed just behind the cleats, but have otherwise left my shoes unscathed. How Eggbeaters Stand Up to the Elements

Eggbeater 3 – 280g per pair. No rider weight limit. Cast stainless steel. Wings are 17-4PH stainless.

Pedal Guide

My Eggbeater 1 pedals worked great for several years, and offered an incredible value at a competitive price. Crankbrothers Eggbeaters vs. Other Bike Pedals When it comes to durability and reliability, Shimano pedals set the standard. For many who are just starting out in cyclocross, Shimano’s SPD- PD-M540 is the mountain bike pedal of choice. With a sturdy clip between the pedal and a hard-wearing metal cleat, as well as a design that allows mud to pass through the body of the pedal, the Shimano SPD pedal is an excellent option for cyclocross newcomers. And despite their name, some of Speedplay’s Ultra Light Action pedals are anything but, depending on your weight tolerances. Perhaps the Best of All Worlds?
