About this deal

USB-C comes in several flavours, based on speed and bandwidth: from Gen1 5Gbps standard to 10GBps Gen2.

USB Type-C has a new feature called Alternate Modes. If your USB-C cable has this feature, you can connect to non-USB devices that support the same Alternate Mode. For example, if your USB-C cable has the Thunderbolt Alternate Mode, you can connect to Thunderbolt devices. There's no setting to turn on—your device automatically uses the appropriate mode if it's supported. Your PC is providing power to other devices, so it has temporarily limited the power it provides to the device you just connected to. Your PC (or phone) has a low battery, so it has temporarily limited the amount of power it can provide to the device. This brings with it some complexity and compatibility issues on certain versions of the macOS, but with DisplayLink drivers installed, all should be well. Hercules Tuff features overvoltage and overcharge protection for peace of mind while you’re charging. It has blue light charging status indicators that turn off when charging is complete, and illuminated, adjustable dividers, that work with any phone or tablet case to keep your devices nicely organized in a row. All other products will be delivered via the fastest available method (excluding bank holidays and weekends) and generally within 3-5 days, depending on customer location. Yes, it doesn’t have its own power supply, but you can connect it to your laptop’s charger (or another) for passthrough charging at up to an impressive 85W.

While we haven’t personally heard of any damage from using a USB-C charger other than the one that came with your laptop, there’s always a slim risk when plugging a laptop into an unknown power source. Faulty cables can also be a problem. Microsoft says that you can charge a Surface device with a USB-C port, but it’s highly recommended that you use the Surface charger that came with the laptop. The HDMI plus one Thunderbolt/USB-C port would connect two displays (4K at 60Hz for Thunderbolt laptops), while the third external display would use one of the USB-C ports (4K at 30Hz). Unless your display has a USB-C connection itself, you’ll need an adapter (not included) using the Thunderbolt and USB-C connections. The HDMI Alternate Mode lets you project video and play audio on an external display that supports HDMI. Select the Start button, then type device manager and select Device Manager from the list of results.

Those sleek oval USB-C ports seem to be everywhere these days—they're now ubiquitous on smartphones and tablets, and they often appear on laptop and desktop PCs as well. But if you're in the market for a new laptop, you might be surprised to see them being used not only for connecting peripherals but for charging, in place of the familiar dedicated power port. Nearly all of the best laptops we recommend nowadays feature USB-C charging, and even those that come with a different AC adapter often support USB-C power. The main exceptions are gaming laptops and mobile workstations, which usually have beefier power adapters to handle the higher wattage those systems require. One other benefit of charging via USB-C is that you don't necessarily need your laptop's own charger on hand. With the near-universality of USB-C, you can plug nearly any USB-C charger into your laptop's USB-C port (if the latter supports charging) and it will at least in theory provide power. (A phone power bank will also do the job in a pinch.) However, Thunderbolt 4 certification also demands that at least one port on any device supporting Thunderbolt 4 supports 100W charging, so you can rest assured you should have at least that on any device that supports Thunderbolt 4. Frequently asked questions Do all USB-C ports allow charging? One last complicating factor: In 2021, the USB Type-C specification was updated to support power delivery up to 240 watts, instead of 100 watts. The change isn't yet supported by most machines, and will generally require a new cable. Make sure the device or dongle is connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports the correct Alternate Mode. For example, if you're connecting a Thunderbolt Alternate Mode device, make sure you connect to the USB-C port that supports Thunderbolt™.
