When comparing the TI-Nspire CX II vs. TI-Nspire CX II CAS, the difference is that TI-Nspire CX II CAS has a computer algebra system (CAS), meaning it can do algebraic operations, while the TI-Nspire CX does not. This means the TI-Nspire CX II CAS is not legal for the ACT test.

OS 5.3 is currently exclusive to the CX II/CX II CAS and their -T counterparts. These features were added in this release: OS 5.2 is currently exclusive to the CX II/CX II CAS and their -T counterparts. These features were added in this release:

The CX series were released in the same time frame as the Casio Prizm (fx-CG10/20), [9] Casio's color screen graphing calculator with similar features. In 2011, Texas Instruments released the CX line of their TI-Nspire calculators which effectively replaced the previous generation. The updates included improvements to the original's keyboard layout, an addition of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, 3D graphing capabilities and reduced form factor. [3] TI got rid of the removable keypad with this generation and therefore, the TI-84 compatibility mode. The navigator system allows teachers to connect multiple TI-Nspire calculators to a computer through the TI-Nspire Access Point and TI-Nspire Navigator Wireless Cradles. The system includes the TI-Nspire cradle charging bay and the main system which looks like a wireless router. The Navigator system was first available when the first generation Nspires were launched, but when the TI-Nspire CX and CX CAS were released, a new wireless adapter was announced that is smaller but not compatible with the TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire Touchpad.

An indicator now displays the angle mode (Degrees, Radians or Gradians) in effect for the current application. In window settings on graphs, exact inputs such as 7/3 or 2*π can now be used for input of custom window settings. [34] Added features in OS 5.0 [ edit ] What does all of this mean for potential buyers of a new TI-Nspire CX II? There are some appreciated new changes to the hardware, such as the faster processor. This will keep students and teachers nimbly moving along in situations that might have bogged down the older model (my students used to love to have dozens and dozens of tabs open on the original TI-Nspire CX until it ground to a halt). I will also say that I’ve noted the battery on the TI-Nspire CX II will hold a charge for a really long time when not in daily use–think months–much like the TI-84 Plus CE. If you find that you need a little help learning how to use your TI-Nspire, I recently started a line of books designed to help students and teachers learn how to use the calculator. TI-Nspire Tutorials Volume 1 is the TI-Nspire for Beginners, that helps you navigate all of the basic features of the calculator. TI-Nspire Tutorials Volume 2 is Using CAS Features Like a Champion, and will get CAS users started with those features only found on the CAS. Both books are currently available in Kindle format for the iPad, iPhone, Android, PC, and Mac. I haven’t had a chance to update these books for the new TI-Nspire CX II yet, but all the features in these beginner level books are available on the new models as well. They will serve you well if you are looking for a beginner book. Is the TI-Nspire CX II Worth the Money? TI-Nspire™ CX CAS / TI-Nspire™ CX II-T CAS

All the same features that make TI-Nspire™ CX graphing calculators ideal for maths and science from middle grades to college are in the next-gen TI-Nspire™ CX II-T models. Let me explain that in more detail. Judging based on polls I’ve run in the past on Tech Powered Math, I’ve found that there’s actually more interest among TPM readers in the TI-Nspire CX II CAS than there is in the TI-Nspire CX II. If you’re unaware of what a CAS calculator is, it is a Computer Algebra System calculator. This means the calculator has the ability to do algebraic manipulations on variables, such as x + x = 2x. This is a great thing if you plan to take the SAT or AP Calculus, where this type of calculator is encouraged, but not so great if you are taking the ACT, where it is banned. The TI-Nspire CX series differ from all previous TI graphing calculator models in that the CX series are the first to use a rechargeable 1,060 mAh Lithium-Ion battery (upgraded to 1,200 mAh in the 2013 revision). The device is charged via a USB cable. TI claims that the battery requires four hours to charge, that a full charge powers the device for up to two weeks under normal daily use, and that the battery should last up to 3 years before it requires replacement. The battery is user-replaceable.
